Anyone here where a Vest? I mean a proper one, not a t shirt, with no arms, plain white etc possibly from M&S ....

You see them a lot in America (Die Hard for example) and after talking to a US colleague in the office, he states a lot of Americans where them becuase:

a) in the hotter states they help sweating onto a a shirt
b) they keep you warm in the winter states/periods.

Yet, here in the UK, they seem to be tagged as the domain of "old" people.

So, 'fess up - whos wearing a vest, and why?

I did wonder why.
My solution is
a) Don't wear a shirt when it's hot.
b) Wear a jumper when it's cold.

Used to wear them as a kid though. Does that still happen?

well you're asking in the right place!

I don't own a vest - but I do tend to wear a jumper under my shirt. I don't routinely work anywhere thats got heating or desks or chairs generally though

Wear them all the time and yes they keep me cool in summer and warm in winter. I use the M&S Cool and Fresh range

I do this aswell since my employers have a "smart" dress code.

It means I can still wear my favourite hoodies and mosher jeans at work.

In Ethiopia, every one wears a vest. So there must be some truth in wearing one in the heat...

Not done that in years

I do have some vests. I went through a stage of liking them with shorts until I saw a photo of myself in that get up. Don't wear them under a short just like I don't wear long johns!

The vest simply provides a trap for the moisture you lose through sweating. I watched a documentary few years back about an old guy on a hospital ward who was left unattended and suffered a degree of dehydration. Turns out that without the vest he was wearing he would have fatally deydrated...

I'm getting more convinced now that I should wear vests.

I just need to build up my arms and chest a bit in case there's an emergency at work. 🙂

I wear a jumper under my shirt for the same reason I wear a fleece under a shell, rather than over it - its warmer. Nice merino sweater for warmth, shirt over the top makes it windproof.

I work with wood and metal too so dust, swarf and shavings tend to not cling as much to a shirt as they do to a jumper and you can wash a shirt more aggressively.

To add to that - have you ever worn a jumper over a shirt and looked in a mirror? Thats a whole load of wrong!

I think T-shirts started out as under wear (so in effect a vest). In the 1950s it became trendy to wear them as an outer garment.

Don't forget to tuck it into your Y-fronts, though. 🙂

I wore one while working on the Med.

But then I had a suntan and semblance of a decent figure. 🙂

Most pubs round my way have signs specifically stating "No Vests" therefore I avoid them.

Excuse me but here in the south we wear tight fitting lycra impregnated "briefs", like that football geezer in the adverts.

Does that still happen?

The man in the shop on the corner wears one under his shirt year-round.

I shall discuss with him next time I visit his establishment and peruse his wares.

I avoid the vests, fool. Why would I limit my beer opportunities over a piece of clothing? 😉

32 years old here - vest wearer and proud. M&S 100% cotton - the ones without the seams.

When I get home, shirt comes off and I bust out the O-Dog look

Phew, I am not alone. I can now reveal I to have been wearing a vest on the odd occasion. But it got covered in curry stains, so I bought some more - the ones that selaciosa mentions.

Most comfy they are too.

Turning up to work bare chested doesn't usually go down well.

How does that work if they don't cover your pits?

If it's properly hot you'll be sweating on your back.

I don't know if I should ask or not, but I often wear a V neck T under my shirt & I would like to find a vest/T that doesn't show when worn under a shirt with the top button undone, any suggestions/piss taking welcome 😳

Bought a couple of M&S vests a few months ago. The missus takes the piss out of me every time I wear one.

Well, if I continue with this job, then I'm going to have to add to the shirt and jumper to protect myself from the year round baltic air condiitioning (yes, if can be 28 degrees outside, and I need a sweater on at my desk). A vest could be just the trick.
