Mrs.S's mum had a chest X-ray a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it wasn't clear and a "shadow" showed up on the film. Today she is having a CT scan to further investigate the abnormality. We are all of course extremely worried and we have all considered the big C as an outcome of this. The MiL has smoked since her teens and she's now 62. Apart from the worst case diagnosis, is there anything else that this could be? I guess I'm asking for false assurances but there must be other, less serious things that the CT could reveal. If it is lung cancer, will they identifiy it from the images or will there have to be some kind of biopsy? She has an appointment with a consultant after the scan. Is it possible that as of this meeting she could know either way?
I know this isn't a medical forum but there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here on STW that I'd like to tap into a bit.
Ta for any feedback.
Pneumonia? Bronchitis?
No doctor here but there really are quite a few things that can cause this. Non of them particularly great things to have at 62 mind.
That said, that's a long time to be smoking.
Hope it's not the big C. Even if it is, there are many different kinds, some treatable, others not and there are many options for extending life considerably nowadays under C conditions.
Hope it goes as well as can be expected.
samuri - a doctor you aint but you were right! Bronchitis - no BIG C!
Thanks for being the only other STWer to bother responding to this.
Merry Christmas to you.
Glad it worked out well in the end!
