We stayed here.

Very central for St Marks Square etc. and was reasonably cheap as far as I remember.

friendly, excellent service.

Stopping over in Venice after all the tourists leave at the end of the day is excellent

We stayed at Palazzo Priuli in the new (Ca Priuli) rooms. The older rooms were all booked but it's in a quiet area and very comfortable.

Right on the grand canal minutes from the station and easy walk to all the attractions. There's a roof terrace. Nothing fancy jsut a big balcony overlooking the canal....great to sit out with a bottle of wine and a chill, but a difficult to find so ask at reception.

Prices varied so try and shop about for a decent deal.

We stayed at the Gritti Palace, sounds rough but its five star and not rough at all, the complete opposite of rough.
