Changed a alternator pulley wheel on my van 3 months ago as it was worn and making a bit of noise sourced the parts myself £35 and fitted everthing run well untill I am driving down the M6 to Lichfield from Kendal and the alternator light comes on, pull over and the pulley wheel has more or less disintergrated and the locking nut has come off.Was pretty sure I had tightened it up,recovered back to my local garage and get them to replace pulley wheel and check that everthing is in order ie bearings on the fan and alterntor. They source the parts and fit telling me they have airgunned the locking nut on 😯 £110 was the bill but happy as apparantly everything is checked.
Travel up and down to Kendal a few times checking the belt after every trip, raced @ sits and i have to do one last clear out of the house as its sold and I head back up to Kendal.
Alterntor light comes on travelling @ 60/65mph once again pull over and the fan belt is slack again one side of the pulley wheel is off centre and loose but lock ring side is solid and no movement same with the lock nut.
Unable to take the pulley wheel off so unable to investigate!
Now should the garage sort the problem out and recover the van back to Lichfield or get another garage here( Kendal) to sort out.

Overtightening will damage a pulley especially if its going on to a tapered shaft with a key.Just replace the whole pulley assembly as the shafts probably borked aswell. if its the pulley on the alternator replace the alternator aswell.

Your 'contract' is with the garage that repaired it so they should be your first port of call. They may agree for a local garage to check it over but will probably want to see it themselves in which case I doubt they'll meet recovery costs until it can be confirmed that their workmanship is the problem.

Try Gibsons on Mintsfeet industrial estate. They once sorted my Landrover at very short notice and at a reasonable price!

I don't understand this bit.
Do you mean the pulley wheel has split in half around it's circumference ?

Graham the pulley is in 2 parts and you use spacers to tightened the belt!
Gibsons are rock solid for two weeks 🙁

Rich,

Didn't mention it last night as I assumed you were going back to the garage that carried out the repair but I would reccomend Kendal VW centre. One of the lads I work with is a massive VW fan (mostly old air cooled vans and variants) and I believe he uses them.

So this is an air cooled VW then?

Well £110 sounds a bit steep in the first place.

However it sounds to me like the shaft on the alternator is toast. If you are up Kendal way, friends use a VW specialist in or near Penrith I think. Sorry I have no details, but I can find out - or try google.
