Reading a couple of other threads on this recently.
Just about to buy a 2012 Vivaro and best quote so far is £640 through Adrian Flux (following recommendations on here). They're saying that due to the modifications (rock and roll bed - fully pull tested and certified, swivelling front passenger seat and leisure battery/inverter) that's the best they can do and few other insurers will even touch it as it's 'not a proper motorhome'.
How are you lot doing it (having seen reports here of figures around 300 quid)? Not declaring mods or just lucky?

Got mine (crew cab Vivaro) on a joint Aviva policy along with our Fiesta, for about what you were quoted.
Had a claim a couple of years ago too, so not flush with NCD.

NCD doesn't really help for specialist insurance, it's mostly down to miles. How many miles a year is that quote for? You'll probably find most people paying less have 5k limits.
Is your van a campervan/motorhome on the log book ? It'll make a huge difference if it is. My 26yr old t4 costs me £135 with 13yrs+ no claims and tpft.

This might be the clincher. It'll be my daily driver too, so I need at least 12k miles a year on it.

Does that include commuting? I'd say that's about right then.
Why not convert it properly and then the V5 can be updated to motorhome. Thats what I did and it wasn't hard. Sounds like you have most of the things in it. Just need permeant cooker but you can always bodge something up with a camping cooker.
Just had to take photos and send them to the DVLA.
We get our insurance through Highway Insurance. Cheap but you do have to be a member of a camping club which adds £50 to your overall cost.
10+ years NCB, 2011 VW T5 converted to a camper, lowered suspension, new wheels, double the power its running from factory, loads of other mods, not a daily driver... THink we pay about £400 for us both fully comp via Brentacre who we've insured all our cars with (standard and modified) over the last 5/6 years. Can't fault them.
Spend a grand or two to convert it to a camper, to save a couple of hundred quid on insurance...

I'm with AF. Struggled to find anyone else which touch a self-built camper. Middle bit is camper, bed/sofa, fridge, table, side window, etc, etc. Rear bit is where the bikes go.
I pay £220 for 10k miles per year, two drivers. 9 or 10 years NCD.
Biggest factor I have found is postcode, rural area in the Borders makes a huge difference.

Postcode shouldn't be an issue (isn't with other vehicles we've got insured) - middle class rural location with low crime rates.
Did you ask about a multi-vehicle policy with your existing vehicles?
We got our van (similar to yours, not a camper van on the V5C) insured through One-Call. they said they would be happy to insure it through a specialist policy as a camper regardless of what the V5C says. I had no NCD to lose anyway, having just returned to the UK. It's ~£350 for 2 drivers with a low (5K?) mileage limit as it's not a daily driver.
I've just this week completed the re-classification as a MOTOR CARAVAN on the V5C, which should give me more ability to shop around for a better deal next time.
Also has increased the speed limits from 50/60/70 that it was stuck to as a PANEL VAN
Brentacre have quoted £380 with 12k mileage, so that's closer to the mark.
Jon - what did you need to do to get it re-classified?
Need to provide evidence to the DVLA that its a 'camper'. Off the top of my head the requirements are a fixed bed, windows and built in/permanent cooking facility with a certificate?

VW T5 with usual wheels and remap mods. 10k per year.
Going on the above should defo check out Greenlight for next year.

Yeah, think we're going to go with them. As you say they weren't fussed about the internal mods at all.
Interestingly it's the same underwriter as the 640 quid quote from Adrian Flux...
Aviva - My LWB modified T5, her wee fiat 500, both of us to drive both, just over 300 quid.

mine's a very standard conversion - sink with tap, 2 gas rings, rock n roll bed, pop top, fridge, storage....
just use the template letter as a guide and supply clear photos, bingo!

Nothing but a map. Was the 88bhp 2.0 CR 5 speed from the factory now running 160bhp which is what everyone says is the sensible limit for these engines with no other supporting mods. Can go further but stuff will break.
Planning on possibly going further but to be honest, its not a racing car and it shifts along very nicely at motorway speeds which is what I want...

I can get the same (with full breakdown cover and courtesy vehicle) through One Call (actually covered by Highway) for £251.
