Does anyone know of a good person / company who can convert a van into a camper?
I want to upgrade mine (it'll be for sale in the classifieds later) yet don't want to afford the £35k for a sparkly new one to the spec I want.

Moses,

Autohaus (now part of Acare Leisure - they used to be independent) did our van for its previous owner (another forumite).
http://www.acareleisureltd.co.uk/www.acareleisureltd.co.uk/info.php?p=4

Its an excellent quality conversion, really solid quality.
It cost something like £10k to do:
pop up bed roof
rock n roll lower bed
cupboards
leisure battery and hookup/charger
sink
fridge
water tank and pump
gas pipes and hob.
Flooring and carpet lining
lights
3x bonded windows
curtains and thermal screens for front.

There's a couple of companies on ebay to look at as well.

They use ebay for cheaper advertising to keep thier costs lower I guess

the eBay ones are usually much cheaper quality materials designed for self builds on a budget. Good VFM some of them though IMO.

See above link, I used my mates from these guys a few weeks ago in Scotland, its superb, they import vans from Japan and convert.

His was a 2.7 D Toyota Regius, I would highly recommend them and at £17k not bad value either

Thank you all.
Calling that lot will keep me busy, and it's great to have recommendations.
Any more?

Moses - BTW, if you are ever out our way (Malvern) you and Mrs Moses would be more than welcome to pour over the van to get a feel for fit out quality and layouts/specs etc.

Few sheets of plywood, a double mattress and a saw are all you really need.

Stoner,
Thank you, that would be really useful.
Mrs M and I passed by that way 2 weekends ago, and it's likely we will do so again soon.

Not used them but have had a nosey in a number of wind surf conversions they've done and they all looks v. good. From memory they weren't cheap though.

Try www.vamoosecamperconversions.co.uk they are in Langsett Sheffield about 1/2 mile from the forest carpark. They often have 1 of their creations outside the house gates. Our blue van is in their gallery and is the best thing we have bought in a long time. They specialise in VW T4 and 5 but he can turn his hand to most things.

I used Vamoose for my elevating roof and vanbodies in Morecambe for lining, windows and seats.
Both companies are excellent - small family firms with quality work and no corners cut. Rob at Vanbodies does a bit of biking and would be keen to do whatever you fancied. A lot of the ebay firms are standard specs.
