Zutons or Amy Winehouse?

Just came on the radio and every single time I hear the AW version I want to smash the radio. Mark Ronson ruined a perfectly good song IMO.

I think it suited her voice better, however Zutons for the music maybe?

Zutons. But I wasn't aware of the Stevie Winwood version so I will now go and have a listen.
[Edit] Oh, that Stevie Winwood song. Still Zutons then.

Zutons, I never understood the love in for Amy, I don't think she has a good voice at all, it has an element of "crying child" to it. You know when your on a plane, excited to be jetting off on your holidays, then 2 rows in front a toddler starts to ball its lungs out, as that sound cuts through everyone in the cabin, that mass emotional despair response is what I feel when I hear Amy Whinehouse sing.

Amy Winehouse had a fantastic soul voice. rich. expressive. I think people get the messed up numpty and the singer muddled up in their heads

Zutons

Winwood's Valerie was a very different song.

Zutons hands down.
I like the Version version, which still stands out as the best LP Ronson's ever done. Which is rather ironic given that a musical parasite's most original project to date has been an album of covers.

Zutons by a huge margin. Never understood the appeal of Amy Winehouse or Mark Ronson.

I like all versions, great piece, even me twanging it out on my guitar would probably be ok to listen to.😂

I quite like the acoustic AW.

The other versions are both dire.

Amy, for sure. Zutons are a band made for radio adverts.

Clearly you do as you’ve just admitted to liking them as lyricists 😀

See, now, comments like this baffle me a bit. You may not like her material (I can take or leave most of it), but I'm surprised that anyone could think that she did not have "a good voice", because, well, she clearly did. I had a similar argument years back with a mate who was adamant that George Michael "can't sing, he's got a rubbish voice". Again, like his stuff or not, he could clearly sing very, very well.

Anyway, Zutons.

Absolutely not, one has to be brilliant and the other utter tosh.

It's the STW way......

Prepare for surprise. It was a ****ing horrible voice to my ears. Can't be helped you know, it's just how the ears work.

Amy winehouse for me, rarely prefer a cover but this is one of the exceptions. Zutons version still good though. prefer a female vocalist and thought her singing was great

As in objectively terrible (i.e. she couldn't sing very well), or subjectively terrible (as in you didn't like the way she sang)?

(Like, say, for me, objectively Pavarotti was clearly a very good singer but subjectively, I can't stand the stuff he sings.)

I never cared for AW's music - derivative, seemed like cultural appropriation somehow. Zutons however are proper musical creative talent.

Zutons for me, not that i think they are that great, but better than amy whinehouse.
I get that she was popular, but for the life of me I can’t understand why.
In my OPINION, she was distinctly average.
But, opinions are like Aholes, etc,
Also, as mentioned above, the great thing about music is the variety, not everyone likes the same thing, the world would be very boring if we did.

I reckon the Zutons probably prefer the Winehouse version, if only for the royalties. Assuming they haven’t been stiffed...

Nah, the song is meh, but Amy Winehouse was a very talented but troubled artist.

I'd rather she hadn't have done a cover, but you know, it's alright. I wouldn't get out of bed for it mind.

When she's not doing covers, and in particular her album Frank, she's pretty epic.

They're both fine, but the Winehouse version has aged better.

Opinions are like aholes, unfortunately there are people without aholes, so more total bollocks born of ignorance, a singletrack speciality.

If I'm at a party then it has to be AW but listening in the car it's The Zutons.
Overall The Zutons get my vote.

Kind of off topic, but she was a decent guitar player. I’m not a fan of her voice, but can see why people are.

Zutons for me - the original and best. Just a shame that there isn't even a 50/50 split in airtime, it's always the Ronson/ Winehouse version

Love both versions. Same song, massively different experiences. I suppose it shows what a good song it actually is...

I like them both. Different enough to like each for what they are.

I really liked AM though, I thought she had something special. And I reckon her music will age better than the Zutons. She clearly also had lots of issues that ultimately got the better of her. Sad.

Mark Ronson

The equivalent of Sean Paul or Lil Jon, but turns up on every other track with a horn section instead of "gal I turn you on" or "yeaahhhhhh".

I’m reminded of the lyrics to a song by a minor internet star who’s name is too rude for here.
“Amy, Amy,

It’s a terrible shame(y)

Your songs were all different,

not at all samey”...

Nope. Plenty of other singers were totally messed up, and ended up dying totally pointless deaths, and it’s perfectly easy to separate a singers talent from how they lived their lives.
I really don’t think she was that great a singer, perfectly adequate, but nothing exceptional, same goes for that bloke from the Libertines that everyone in the music media seemed to get all moist over.
Now, Dusty Springfield, on the other hand...
Oh, and I’m not that taken with The Zutons either, OK, wouldn’t turn the radio off if they were played, but that’s about it.

Disappointed not about Stevie Winwood 🙁

I could never see the fascination with Amy Winehouse, sounded like a strangled cat to me. Just not my cup of tea but plenty of people seemed to rate her.
