I am going to Africa on a cycling challenge and wondered how much it would cost me in phone charges to use my Strava app to GPS my rides?
I also wonder about the coverage in Kenya and Tanzania...

Long as you turn data off ( not just roaming) there will be no charges
You will need wifi to upload data though . Strava records from gps data
Ive tested this running in many countries

Gps doesn't use any data anyway, just upload using wifi as and when.

so during ride I am fine to 'record' but I need to be careful on the upload i.e. use wifi?
