Most probably a daft question. But I cannot get my garmin to auto play on my lap top when I plug it in. I get a box asking me to open files. I would if thought it would just open up like my I phone does??? Really peeing me off as I know it's something stupid. Please someone put me out of my misery cheers :).
What sort of Garmin is it?
If it's an Etrex then you need to switch it to "USB" mode from the settings menu.
Also, have you installed the Garmin USB drivers?

winston dog it a forerunner 10. downloaded latest drivers for it, i think its something to do with my autoplay settings. I hate computers!!
