Does anybody know if it's possible to buy a prepaid SIM for an iPad while on holiday in Europe instead of getting reamed for data roaming charges? Are iPads region coded to stop this kind of thing?

Can't you just get a SIM in each country, or head to your nearest Starbucks? Certainly in Madrid centre you're never far from a WiFi connection, and most hotels seem to offer them these days.

I hope so, will they work OK in a UK iPad?

Don't bring one to Ethiopia. Won't work, no 3g network...

One of the new volunteers did, and was very surprised.

Anyone would think it was a third world county.

I've always though Geldof had his priorities wrong...to think there are children who have never played Angry Birds 🙁

Would have thought so, or does an iPad take a microsim like the iPhone? They might be harder to get hold of. Still, I'd just use the WiFi - do you really need to be online all the time? (Perhaps you do, if you're planning on using it for satnav or whatever?)

Something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/UltimateAddons-Micro-Cutter-Adapters-iPhone/dp/B003VAQ0I2 deals with the micro-sim issue.

Haven't come across a europe-wide roaming data SIM at a sensible price though. Best off picking up a PAYG SIM locally, most now let you buy a bundle of data of data to use.

I used mine in Spain but only wifi. Pre-pay sims are available, but you need the unit to be unlocked (not sure if that is a real issue TBH) and the registration process for sims in spain is a bit convoluted - need passport and possibly a Spanish address.

I just used mine where I could get a free wifi signal. Install Skype, load some credit, and you can use it for cheap calls too.

yep - I often buy a local PAYG data SIM when abroad. If you bought the iPad or iPhone from the Apple store then it is unlocked, if you bought it via a package from a mobile operator then it might be locked - just borrow a friend's SIM from another network and see if it works to see if its locked or now.

I carry a tiny WiFi AP with a 3G dongle, so if I'm in a hotel with Ethernet only, I can create my own Wifi Hotspot.

Take a look at: http://www.expansys.com/option-globesurfer-x-1-wireless-cellular-router-181292/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=base&ito=1701

also you could pick up a MiFi and unlock it:

Pretty sure my iPad uses a micro-sim although it's been a while since I changed it.

In theory you can walk into any mobile shop in europe and buy a PAYG micro sim - certainly that's how it works in this country.

NB Most PAYG SIMs now come in dual format - large (old) size with snap out micro-SIM as part of it.
