Are there any cameras which can be charged via USB?

My kindle, phone and MP3 player can be, and with a very tight luggage restriction on a flight to Nepal soon, I don't want to be taking extra chargers, when I can just take a socket and 1 cable otherwise...

TBH this is probably the most important aspect of the camera - I'm fairly confident most cameras can take decent enough shots for facebook and the like. If the camera is rugged etc, then even better. I'd use my mobile, but the battery life isn't good enough.

like this:

Yep, my new Olympus TG1 is USB charged by that same cable. Means that I can take one wall plug adaptor and one cable for camera and one for phone. Much, much less to cart around! Also have a USB adaptor to plug my DSLR battery in to if I take that away with me. The TG1 is my "throw in a bag in case something interesting crops up and I want a take a pic or two!" camera.

If the camera is rugged etc, then even better.

It's as tough as a tough thing, and so far, picture quality is very good. (Not as good as my DSLR, but to be expected)

May as well close the thread now.

Kindle and phone are micro USB, check that the MP3 and the camera are the same - lots of them use mini USB (and the photo shows a mini USB).

Although even if they are different, two cables is easier than another charger.

Rogg, the TG1 is mini-USB. For me, one of my phones is also my MP3 player, and they're both micro-USB. As you say, two cables is nice and easy, especially with a small USB lead to mains plug adaptor.

thanks CHF

forgot to put a budget in, so probably fair to assume that the TG1 is above it 🙁

reckon i've around 100-130 to play with. have seen the samsung DV300 which looks to fit the bill (other than ruggedness)

ah, micro-usb - oops... but yeah, i can carry a few cables no bother.

Nikon are going that way...my P300 has a charger with a usb cable. I think it's a proprietary connector to the camera so you will have take that cable with you.
Bit of a pain to be honest as it means they don't supply you with a separate charging plate, you have to use the camera as the charging device. You can buy a charging base as an accessory I think

tbh that sounds fine to me. i tend to buy a cheap crap camera before each major trip (every 2-3 years), and then seem to require a new one for the next trip. rarely use it inbetween big trips!

Be aware that some cameras link to a computer via a mini usb but don't charge that way (battery needs to be removed and charged externally)

Erm, yes it is. Sorry! 🙂

May be worth a look at some of the other Olympus Tough range, as that's the super-spanky version, there are other simpler ones as well. Not sure about their charging set up, though.

thanks CF, have seen a couple of others within budget, with USB charging, which look good. sent to my sis (who gets paid to take photos) to see what she thinks...

(i did ask her, but she said there weren't any USB charging cameras?!)

mrsmidlife took a Pentax Optio WG2 GPS to the Indian Himalayas and whitewater rafting on the Indus. Held up well and took some nice photos, but auto white balance not very clever for indoors, but easily overridden.

(She assures me there was white water round the corner, but was too busy paddling to take pics then.)

Is it moon on a stick to ask if there might be a small camera with USB charging facility that also has a GPS chip?

Edit - apart from the Pentax one ^^^^

Pickers, do you mean apart from the Olympus one? That has GPS.

From the mag sitting next to me the following have GPS: Panasonic Lumix FT4, Fujifilm Finepix XP 150/100, Nikon Coolpix AW 100, Canon Powershot D20 GPS, Pentax Optio Wg-2 GPS.

Not sure about USB, though previous to this thread I'd assumed all compacts could be USB charged - is that not the case? Certainly both of my daughters' compacts are charged that way, while my DSLR has a separate charger...

Edit: it's an "outdoor" mag, the camera's listed are outdoor "rugged" models, water resistant etc.

CFH - Ooh, didn't realise the Olympus one had GPS, couldn't tell whether the Pentax one can be USB charged - the fact that it's here suggests so but the Jessops site is less forthcoming.

It's even got dog AND cat mode....

Apparently it can tell when a cat, or a dog, is in shot. 😕

Yes, USB charging on the Pentax. Too many modes on these cameras, the Pentax lets you point the camera at someone, it waits until it sees them smile, then takes the pic. 🙄

There are lots. Mrs Grips' Sony TX10 does (although it needs a special cable FROM the USB charger, it will work with any) and my Oly TG810 does (but again that's the other type of micro USB).

If you want one with the same micro USB as the kindle etc - there should be some I reckon.

thanks all, will get geeky with them all.

was just surprised when my sis said there wasn't (but then i don't think she's used anything other than a DSLR for about 10 years...)

Another vote for the TG1 - very happy with mine and does charge via USB and has GPS.

However it's not micro USB, it has its own propriety cable which is similar to micro USB, but not compatible. Not a problem to me, as I leave the cable in the bag with the camera, but it would be easy to get caught out and it's probably not easy to get a replacement in Nepal...

That Olympus cable isn't proprietary.. there is just more than one kind of micro usb.. 🙄

Just plugged mine in to this very laptop...
Uses the same mini-USB as my Canon DSLR, so I'd say that isn't proprietary but a perfectly normal lead!

Making sure it's all charged before my trip tomorrow. Am heading West.....

Lumix TZ30 has GPS and charges with a USB cable. Simples.
