Ok so I have never gotten into the internals of the black box sitting on my desk!

For convienence I need to start using the kids PC for a bit of work, but I never bought it to be that fast online so it is not exactly the speediest machine on the planet.

I have been told to upgrade the RAM,

The memory is currently 512MB, and looking online it looks to me to be a fairly straighfoward job to upgrade that by additional memory cards??

Any recommendations as to what I should buy, how to install, useful websites etc.? Its not my main computer so I am just looking to get bettr functionality without spending a fortune.

Most platforms have a limitation on what you can upgrade them to, in my case it was doubling the memory, but it greatly improved the performance. I bought off ebay, whole list of makes and models to chose from. They always suggest using anti static wrist strap thing but other than that pretty straight forward. Mine was a lap top by the way and just a case of unscrewing a cover on the underdside and slot it in.
Seemples.

You need to be 100% sure you buy the correct memory for your computer (correct physical format, correct speed, type, size etc).
Crucial website if pretty good for this if you don't know (I think it will scan you computer).

Also, you need to be very careful when installing it to avoid destroying the memory with static electricity.

Crucial sell it as guaranteed-compatible so just grab it and fit it. It's easy as pie, honest. Don't fret overly about static but Google for instructions and follow them.

should tell you what ram you already have, how many slots and the type to replace it with - you don't have to get crucial stuff just get the details, type and speed.
and yes 512 is pretty rubbish, up it to 1 or even 2Gb.

Thanks I did use Crucial and found their website to be very useful and it seemed to be a very easy excersize, so thanks to all for confirming that.

I told the wife what I was going to do and she gave me "one of those looks"...
