I know my laptop is old but I would like to upgrade the RAM (256MB DDR at the mo) to 1GB+ and make it wireless. It is a Toshiba Satellite P10-304. It says on the sticker that it is Wirless LAN upgradeable.
Easy enough to do?
I also have a Dell Inspiron 530. According to the blurb it has bluetooth and wireless already. I clicked on Computer, system properties etc and saw Bluetooth which says its working but can't find it if I search on my phone? Am I doing something wrong or have the wrong end of the stick?
How can I tell if it is wireless? I am thinking about getting a wireless printer and router now, so would seem wise to check first. PC World weren't very helpful last night when I asked!

You'll need a USB WiFi dongle for the laptop if it doesn't have the hardware in it. Toshiba probably made some expensive plug in card back in the day.
Do you need the bluetooth on the Inspiron (a 2007 model?)? If not why bother worrying if it's discoverable or not?
If you want the Inspiron to work wirelessly then turn on its WiFi and get it to look for wireless networks. If you're living anywhere in a town then it's likely to find something. This'll show you its wireless works. Then just get the rest of the gubbins: wireless router & wireless printer.
If the wireless doesn't pick anything up then you have a choice: get the router (usually 'free' with your broadband subscription) & printer & see what happens. If it still picks nothing up then open the case and look for the card. Yank it out and stick a fresh, 'n' one in if your router is 'n' compatible. The other option is to make the wireless work before buying the stuff.
If things still don't work out then get a Mac. 😉

I've got a mini-pci Wifi card (B only, but thats equivalent to broadband speeds) and some ddr SODIMMs (2x512MB) from my XP toshiba satellite pro, that should fit your machine (I can check tonight) you can have for £15 posted if you like.
