Considering Trump is such a complete *****, It doesn’t say much about Biden that he’s only just scraped through.

That impression is easy to get with the circus around not being allowed to count the early votes in many states. Weds morning it looked close but now it settling down it looks like Biden might win it by the same amount trump did over Clinton.

if he wins the states he’s currently ahead in he’ll win 306 – 233 which will be a larger win than Trump had in 2016,

Same score, just reversed (discounting the +4m in the popular vote)

CNN are reporting they’ve already assigned more presidential security to Biden.

Restricted airspace

Looks like the Secret Service et al know what’s going to happen

I wonder if that's because they think he will win, or because they're worried some nutter is going to take a shot at him to stop him "stealing" the election?

seems Ivanka’s drawn the short straw.

No... she's been tweeting the same nonsense about not counting illegal votes etc. etc. Seems like she's going down with the ship also.

Has he? He's on for 306 Electoral College votes, more than Trump got. He's defeated an incumbent president (always tough to do), despite sustained attempts to suppress voters and interfere with mail-in voting. And won the popular vote by a significant margin.

I do hope Trump doesn't concede so he can be evicted properly in January.

The guy involved in Obama's team on CNN said all completely standard process.

It's officially over: Gazza’s just turned up at the White House with a fishing rod, four cans of lager and a bucket of chlorinated chicken.

Electoral college votes look to be going towards 306 for Biden versus 232 for Trump. Not exactly scraping through!

Doesn't tradition mean the outgoing president hosts the new one in the whitehouse just before the swearing in. I can remember seeing the Obama's hosting the Trump's there.

That's going to be an absolute car crash!

I had a look at the last 40 years of results earlier today... by the time the votes are all counted, this is likley be a very normal win, not "scraping through" at all. Trump has set the narrative so well... probably the greatest narrative ever... so so good.

Looking back at old US election results, anyone remember Walter Mondale? Jesus H Christ he got spanked, he basically won his home state, by 4k votes and lost everywhere else. Poor sod, you don't come back from a beating like that.

I don't see the Republican party reverting to tradition. Trumpist populism clearly works, it just needs refining.

Ideally they want someone else to do the same thing only a little smarter and without the baggage. That would rule out his sons who are just as stupid but without the instinctive ability to tell people what they want to hear. Maybe his missus or daughter.

Nothing wrong with recounting states that are really close. But it usually makes bugger all difference - it's just a way of prolonging the uncertainty.

Also if it's across 4 states and Trump needs at least three to go the other way the chances are approaching zero it would have any impact on the result

Any normal person would bow out gracefully

Doesn’t matter, it’s a formality. If the margin is within 0.5% (which it will be), a recount is automatically triggered. It’s time consuming but the media will still ‘call’ the state on the basis of the first count. Officially, there are no ‘results’ until the scores are submitted anyway - I believe this is on 8th December(?). Even then it’s only official once the 538 votes come in from the electors (though they have always gone with the votes) that the president is officially elected (early January).

Previously, recounts have changed the tallies by a couple of hundred votes max.

For balance, he’s never been made Bankrupt personally, he uses US bankruptcy regulations in the same was a lot of UK Ltd Co. use liquidation to screw suppliers and creditors over.

@P-Jay. Yes, fair point, I put that badly.

Although I would say that if the businesses which are the source of your personal wealth generate no revenue and eventually go tits up, it's difficult for those businesses to provide you with an income. (Not impossible though). So Trump's actual wealth is basically limited to the businesses that actually made money.

When a business goes bankrupt though, it tends to lose its assets. Somehow Trump, or an entity controlled by him, has managed to hold onto to them.

If this does signal the end of America's experiment with nationalist populism, its going to leave us looking even more like the dumbest mofo's on the planet, stuck here with Boris and Brexit

I did wonder if Boris’s U-turn on a lockdown and extension of furlough into March at the original rate was a response to US exit polls. Just a thought. The times might be achanging, we’re due.

I'm not so sure. Trump has dominated everything that isn't urban and near suburbs. Look at how Biden is leading PA. Tiny islands of blue in a massive sea of red. Rural people (including non-white) see absolutely no home for them in the Dems. They see no home for themselves in the GOP. Where they do see a home is the Trump whitehouse. The Dems have increasingly lost touch with those voters. Unless they get them back we are going to see the US stuck on repeat for many years to come.

Beards like that just look weird…. Also see Rob Warner. If anyone on here has a beard like that then please tell me how it ends up looking like that, is dyed? Fuzzy felt?

Ooh! Something I can actually answer. It’s a clown beard and that’s why it looks like that. Basically somebody who doesn’t understand defining a proper neckline and shaves the beard too close to the jaw. Gives that freaky sexual predator with a stuck on beard look. You’d think he’d be able to afford a decent barber, but then you look at his dad’s haircut and it all starts to make sense.

It only looks like a sea of red until you take into account population density. Land doesn’t vote, people do...

There was a nice data viz comparison posted the other day, one colouring the US results by land area and the other reflecting population instead. The second one was a better reflection of the actual voting pattern in the US, with a neat reminder that 'people vote, not land'

Edit - what he said ^

Well they certainly weren't as dumb as to repeatedly slate the only viable alternative and call him silly names, I'll give you that.

Uk could probably learn something from the US here..You don't always get the best person for the job, sometimes you should be glad to end up with the least worst option.

Looking at the swing states, WI, MI and PA aren't going to vote for Trump again, are they? They've clearly just rejected him after voting for him 4 years ago. So how do the Republicans get those votes back? Surely Trump himself is done as a future candidate - how does he expand his base while still being Trump?

This is the problem of the GOP in a nutshell. Increasingly the "everything that isn't Urban or near suburbs" vote is getting smaller and less relevant. The Republican party haven't in the last 8 or so elections appealed to anyone living in the large US cities, their support comes from isolated and run-down rural communities that are literally dying on their arses.

FFS make a ruddy decision USA - its obvious that Biden has it but its not mathematically certain.

On BIden as a candidate - bland was what they needed and also the richest candidate gets the nomination.

Trumpy will probably hang on in the Whitehouse and try and use it as leverage for some sort of immunity against future prosecution for acts committed when he was in office. No doubt when the Dems get in government they'll uncover all manner of corruption where Trumpy abused his position / inappropriate use of resources for personal use.

A couple of little headlines on the CNN website:

Trump has told people he has no plans to concede...

Yep and no matter how you represent it, the Democrats are not connecting with people outside urban areas. That's fine as long as you clean up in urban areas. Biden is running at over 80% in a lot of them.
Trump won last time by flipping some suburbs and taking away some ofthe Dems margin in urban areas. He didn't win them, he didn't have to. He just needed to reduce their margin a bit.
The only way you stop this happening again is for the Dems to reconnect with rural voters. Otherwise the next Trump grabs a little bit of your urban margin, messages to suburban soccer moms better than the Dems and the Dems have absolutely no reply. A bit like Labour has lost touch with thr middke and north of England. They can't beat the tories in the south, so theyve lost.
That's just the election. If you want to make the country less sharply divided, which is better for everyone, anyway you have to reduce that gap between rural and urban. Look at the places in the world that have allowed themselves to become really polarised. It isn't pretty at all.

In the USA, people vote for White Supremacy where very few black people live. It’s the same over here, people vote based on immigration issues first and foremost where there are very few immigrants.

People saying the non urban vote is less relevant is entirely the point. It might be becoming less numerous.

Although a lot of the states are damn near split down the middle. There's 1-2% between them. Which means the population isn't far off evenly split between urban and rural. So Trump takes 21% of the urban/suburban vote instead of 20% and he's president. That's basically what he did in 2016. While demographics are moving more people to the cities, they are also changing the ratio of e.g. hispanics. Who vote Republican and live in cities. Florida was a state that was up for grabs. Not looking like that so much. Works both ways.

A couple of little headlines on the CNN website:

Oh absolutely.

Trump is different (ain't that the truth). Most, if not all Politicians who get to the point of holding or even standing for the highest office in their land have lost plenty of elections on the way to the top. They have more humility, and even if they're just being pragmatic they'll use their concession speech to look gracious and set out their principles ready for the next run, or if they've fought their last election, for the sake of their legacy. Most will genuinely wish the winner well like boxers at the end of a fight. Trump has made a couple of weak runs at office before now, but 2016 was the first time the Public could actually vote for him, there's also no decency to him, or humility.

In a few hours or days, when the states have counted enough votes to rule out 1 candidates chances of winning and declare, Biden will (probably) become President-Elect, US Law says he'll be sworn in on Jan the 10th, Trump can't just say 'No' stomp his feet and refuse to leave, he'll be arrested and forcibly removed, I'd love to see it about as much as I'd like to see anyone in their 70s dragged away by Police.

In fairness to Trump, whilst he's probably lost, he hasn't yet, there's still a mathematical chance he could win, but this will pass soon. It looks like he's going to go down crying, there will be law suits, lies and probably violence done in his name. He doesn't seem able to do the decent thing, he just can't admit he's lost, and the worst part is if he did, he could avoid a lot of trouble for the people hes sworn to protect, but he won't, because he'll be safe on the top floor of trump tower protected by the Secret Service for the rest of this life.
