ok gang.. the guy that recently hurt his shoulder and couldn't possibly train for 4 weeeks.. and my own recent elevator problem has got me thinking about turbo trainers.

who can recommend a good, but fairly cheap one... it will need to live outside but in a shed when I'm not using it.

thanks,

Just a heads up, they take a lot more will power and commitment than you realise. I know no end of people with turbo trainers in the corner of the garage covered in dust. They are the devils play thing unless you're really keen on working on race fitness. They're no good for "fun" fitness if you know what I mean.

Maybe try second hand. If you're near Nottingham, you can have a look at mine.

Being 2 weeks post op on a broken collar bone and confined to a sling for the next 4 weeks a turbo trainer is all I've got. It's really boring, sweaty and quite hard on your backside cos you can't hold the bars.

Onza... thanks.. that has been on my mind.. I've always hated the stationary bikes at the gym but ..well... I'm some how hoping that sitting in my back yard watching the TV thru the french doors would somehow help.. naive? ya.

Mossman.. you can't hold the bars?... sorry but why is that?.. angle?

I bought a Tacx one recently from Chain Reaction. It's got a 10 resistance remote thing, folds up pretty small & was only £125. Seems to do the job well, but I have nothing to compare against.

If you get one, I'd also get one of those towel things to stop your bike getting caked in sweat.

I find it pretty boring, unless you are doing a specific type of session - intervals etc. are fine, but if I go on it and think I'm just gonna have a hard, fast ride I get bored & stop fairly quickly.
I bought mine as I wanted something to use when the weather's cak/I get home late from work etc. and I expect to use it more in the winter months.

when the weathers rubbish i open the garage door and sit on it just out of the rain and watch the world go by with a podcast on, usaually last about an hour. in the winter when its even worse weather and pitch black i put something like roam on the telly then do a light spin to the slower music tracks then all out thrashing for the sections of the film like when peaty is hooning it down the welsh hills.

I used mine to train for riding Lands end to John O'Groats and found that it helped no end.
To start it was a bit boring just listening to music so now I take the laptop into the garage and watch DVD's.
Also you can get out of the saddle to vary the position.
I will be using mine during the dark winter nights, unless I am night riding that is.8)

grynch,
I can reach the bar with my good arm, no way with the other it just doesn't move enough and I shouldn't if I could. Feels weird one handed so I just sit up and pedal.

p.s... a couple of you guys mention garage... I wish... no garage... I got a shed but it's tiny... no way is there enuf room to set up a trainer so if I go this route I'll just be on the back patio.

and hey.. here is a surprise.. I've found more than a few for sale on the swiss version of eBay ( ricardo.ch ) ... seems people can't wait to get rid of them.

... and I'm starting to think... if I'm in the back patio in the cold, I may as well be out on the roads. ( except of course a warm drink is a lot closer when I'm on the patio )

Hit the roads and take a flask.
I only have a cellar wall to look at and the paint's long since dry

Mine lives in the lounge. Hellishly hot at the moment, so might move it onto the balcony.
