Thinking about having a few days away in the Trossachs early August - will we be in for a midgy battle?

Have vague childhood memories of being eaten alive somewhere around Dumfries and Galloway at that time of year.

Yes, but they are only tiny and many human beings are intelligent enough to outsmart them.

Take a few precautions and you'll be fine.

It could be pretty bad but if this dry warm summer keeps up they might be struggling a bit by then. They struggle to breed when the boggy bits of grass dry out.

It probably really depends on what you want to do. Camping by a loch side with small kids could be murder. A week in a cottage biking with your mates less so.

Was in Balquhidder last Friday and the sun was bright with a gentle breeze so the Caledonian Luftwaffe was mostly grounded, although in a wooded sheltered area the clegs were out.

Midge numbers seem to be pretty low at the moment.

If we get a wet July though, all bets are off.
