[Closed] Travelling to Canary Wharf - drive or train/tube?

Hi all,

I might need to be at an afternoon meeting in Canary Wharf in a week or so.  Is it sensible to drive in and out or should I go public transport?

I have a great dislike for travelling into London so trying to plan ahead!

Thanks

It partly depends where you're coming from but as a London resident there's no way I'd drive to anywhere within the M25 unless there really was no other option.

A2 and tunnel if from the East, I do this trip weekly and it’s about 1/2 on a good day from the M25.

A2 is ave speed cameras at 50mph all along it now from the top of the hill outside Bexley.

It’s london. Leave the car at home

I drive into central London occasionally for work. Need to take kit so its the only realistic option. As long as you avoid the worst times then it isn't that bad. Biggest issue is parking but that is usually easy to find, just expensive. For me its quicker than the train door to door, and much cheaper. More flexible too. If someone else was paying and I had a small bag I'd probably take the train, but the practicalities make driving the better option. This is for an occasional trip, no way could I do it regularly

Park in Waitrose car park (jubilee tube 5mins walk & DLR 6mins) £5 for a couple of hours rising to £25 24hrs

Waitrose carpark has three levels, L1 full by 0630, L2 1/2 full by 10. 3lifts to Shopping Level (1floor down from street level) and about 20 exits to street level. Cabot Sq almost in the center of the complex.

Coming in from Redditch

Personally, unless you have lots of kit I'd be on the train. The M1/M40 and M25 can be a nightmare and that's before you've got into London. Fast train from New Street into Euston and Tube or Boris Bike across from there. You also get the option of a pint at the Euston Tap on the way home.

Middle of the day and someone else paying for parking would be OK though - but it might be a slower trip home. Plenty of parking in Canary Wharf, it's all underground.

Outside rush hour, driving in to Canary Wharf from the M11 is usually a breeze provided there are no accidents.

If I was coming from the West(ish), I'd go round the M25 and come in from the North.

However... What time does your meeting finish? Getting in might be fine but getting back out and round the M25 could be a ballache.

Finishing at 5:30 so think train and tube might be best option.

Oddly when I head out (on the M4) at that time it's remarkably quiet heading out, much busier heading in. M25 will be bad though, I just cross that.

+1 for train and tube, although leaving at that time will be no fun whatever mode of transport you take (jet packs excluded obvs)

I drove there once.  Got in late at night, still took.. I dunno, an hour or an hour and a half to get there round M25, can't remember.  On the way back I left at like 11pm and drive through the middle of London just for the hell of it.  There was hardly any traffic but the ten or so miles to the start of the M4 still took an hour.  The sheer number of traffic lights and junctions was the problem. Insane and very frustrating.

For two years I used to have to drive in and out of London fairly regularly, picking up and delivering cars for BCA Logistics. For any other purposes I will drive to a reasonably easy point on the outskirts, near a handy tube station, and get around the city that way. I like driving, I don’t like driving in London, it’s not a lot of fun.

I spent too long travelling to HSBC's Canary Wharf HQ - always by train to mainline station and then jubilee line or DLR.

Would never drive into London.

Cycle - No other way in London is so pleasant or efficient.  Dartford to Canary Wharf is about 50 minutes.

It looks like both options take the same length of time. I've driven to Canary Wharf a few times over the last year (had to take bulky equipment with me) and then did it on the train and while it was usually an OK drive when it was bad it was awful. I usually went in the middle of the day, if you're leaving at 5.30 it'll be pretty horrid I think. The train was a  lot easier.

If it was me, I'd drive the bulk of the way there, park somewhere outside of the M25 get a train into central london and then tube it to Canary Wharf.
