Hi folks.
Looking to have a two week break down in Garmisch / Bavarian Alps in the Summer, but want to drive there from the NW. Looking to do the journey over 2/3 days each way.
Once i've made the crossing into France what is the best way to travel with some nice places for overnight stops on the way? Any suggestions? Somewhere nice and scenic just to chill out, not necessarily a big city etc.
Thanks
Si
I've done that journey a few times on but normally do it in 2 days with a stopover (i'm SE based).
Camping or hotels? We normally camp.
Head through France and you'll pay tolls. If you go through France - Troyes is nice or if you want somewhere scenic, the Forest D'orient is pretty relaxed with swimming, gentle cycling etc.
Belgium/Luxembourg route - Arlon, Bernkastel, Cologne, Koblenz.
If you're camping, I can give you some specific campsites....
Thanks - sorry it will be hotel / B&B / guest house type of place.
Hull/Rotterdam or Hull Zeebrugge works well from NW.
It means you can get away from work on a Friday afternoon and catch the ferry that evening, then wake up Saturday morning, have breakfast then hit the road. Stop over Munich/Ulm if you like.
We always use Hull-Rotterdam.
It docks an hour or so later on a Saturday so that has a slight impact on journey time (so a weekday crossing makes it slightly easier).
We have done Rotterdam to Albstadt on a Saturday with bad traffic, arriving at 19:00.
Have also done Rotterdam - Damuls in Austria on a Saturday, arriving at 22:00 (we knew the chalet from a previous year so just arranged a hiding place for the key). That was a very chilled drive as no particular deadline - headed further east and then down past Kassel - Fulda - Ulm which is usually quieter than Koln / Frankfurt side. The Nuremberg - Munich motorway is also a good quiet run.
This year we intend to return from Meiringen (Switzerland) to Rotterdam in one hit for evening ferry (5am start).
All of the above is in a slow MPV sticking around 70mph (2 people sharing driving).
I do the same journey (Wirral to Salzburg area) around 5 times a year.
Usually leave the house around 10am, get a 4pm ferry Dover/Dunkirk, get to a Luxembourg hotel around 11pm. All 1 tank off fuel, 550 miles.
Set off around 10am next morning, 450 miles to Austria usually takes 7 or 8 hours.
Always use the Lille, Luxembourg, Pirmasens B10 shortcut through Black Forest, Stuttgart, Munich route, avoid Brussels, traffic can be horrendous.
Thanks folks. Yes would like to avoid the French tolls.
Stayed here and it was a good place. Nice curry house that served it in a pan...
nive base to drive round we had a nice trip to fussen where you can tour the castle from chitty Chita bang bang.....
