A friend who grew up in a less than salubrious area once relayed to me that the local scum class liked when the travellers were in town - as it meant they could go out stealing without fear of being caught. They deliberately increased their theivery levels at these times.

diversity training at the police specifically called this out.
The training guy said it was unfair and prejudice to call them thieving gypo b******s, whilst it was true that theft tended to rise when they around, their parentage was not something we could determine and it was therefore unacceptable to use such a term.

We should be more tolerant, invite them in for a brew and get to know them.

We're fortunate that the travellers who visit this area are a bit lazier, and are more into leaving the place like a tsunami of shite has hit it, rather than having a penchant for thievery.

Just arranged for council to remove our old double bed for an eyewatering £38. Thats £28 for the "bed" and another £10 for the base

I was then was annoyed to find out the travellers are back. Could have probably got rid of it for a tenner, and it would have ended up in the same place after it was flytipped and the council cleared the place up using my council tax anyway. At least then i would have been getting a bit of service for my money 😉

Stow on the Wold has a gypsy fair each year. Most shops and pubs shut when the fair is on. The Co-op which stays open hires extra security.

I've had more than my fair share of experience with travelling communities. No point sharing it here because someone will write a thousand words about why it's not true.

The OP said that travellers are friendly: I think this is a generalisation but agree that it isn't racist.

There is a big camp around a mile from me.
These are not nice people.
There have been at least 3 shootings there, regular raids with the Police saying they have removed a number of stolen cars and caravans, each time.
2 people who lived there were convicted of modern slavery, they had taken on some eastern european guys as labourers, but had then pretty much imprisoned them and made them work for them.
They tried to rob the local bank, but failed. Their getaway was meant to look like they had run down the motorway embankment, but there was a footpath at the end of that road that went 200 metres to their camp!

In one fo the raids, around 200 power tools were seized, so that's 50 or so workmens vans broken into.
They are a one site crime wave.

I’ve never had any dealings with travellers, but I know a lot of folk who have. Not one of them had a pleasant experience, two of them were downright terrifying. One involving a firefighter getting badly beaten, the other a teenager having to flee his house and hide in a field.

Anecdotal, absolutely, but to not hear one good thing in thirty odd years leads me to believe there might just be serious issues with some travelling communities. To pretend otherwise just seems a bit silly.

The great majority of modern ‘travellers’ are Irish, so no racial aspect. A close friend of mine was telling me the other day that two groups have moved onto local private property, one in Marshfield, around twenty caravans and attendant vehicles are on a community field, the hut belonging to the tennis club has already been vandalised and pretty much destroyed.
The other bunch have moved into the car park of the Compass Inn at Tormarton, not far from Marshfield and Junction 18 on the M4.
It’s a convenient get-out to shout ‘racism’ when any criticism is raised about these people, who pretty much rely on it to enable them to do anything they want with virtually no reprisals. They’re no different to anyone else born in the British Isles, other than a desire to go where and when they want, pay nothing and leave nothing but destruction, trash and filth in their wake.
The local Roma who had a council-supplied site, and were never any problem to anyone were driven off by incomes from Ireland, and were forced to find a new, small site just outside of town, while at their old site the hedges were pulled out and burned, hedge trimmings and other junk were dumped by the road nearby, an old road that went past the was bisected by a bypass and became a bridleway was filled with dumped, burned-out cars, huge gas bottles and piles of other trash and broken glass, and a posse of police cars and a helicopter overhead became a common weekend local feature.
The simple fact is they don’t give a shit about anyone else, and it’s not in any way ‘racist’ to say so, they’re no different to me, White norther Europeans.
To add to this, not so long ago a bunch of kids on scooters were wandering around the estate where I work, trying to force their way through the security turnstile, and a couple of blokes in an old BMW with Irish plates pitched up at our remote site interrogating our security person as to whether there were cameras, how many security people were on site, if there was anyone there at night...
As we entered lockdown our Livingstone site was broken into and several cars stolen, so with these guys poking around, and it’s known for a fact they were from another bunch of travellers pitched not far away, those on site locked all the gates, parked cars across the gates on the inside, and took all the keys out of several hundred cars, which we’ll have to sort out when we reopen.

I've had experiences with travellers. Some are nice, some are evil ****s. Unbelievably, some are just "ok". As I've explained to my 9 year old, the central point of the equality movement is to treat people equally. The way I've told her to approach this is to treat people with respect, until they prove to you they don't deserve it.

Every dealing I've had with them has been unpleasant and unsavory and unsafe.

They might not all be like that. I might just be unlucky.

A comment that is relative to the position of the observer.

Having been assaulted twice and seeing my 72 year old dad being assaulted I have no time at all for the travelling community.

They are already showing their true colours and being threatening to the land owners.

My brother runs a company with a large amount of machinery close to Orpington. His premises are constantly targeted by the local Irish 'travelling' (although they are mostly on permanent sites) community.

They quite often drive down onto the premises during the day asking if the want to sell any vans. That is normally accompanied by some kind of break in.

The last episode he told me of was in broad daylight on a weekday they drove down in a mondeo with a tow bar and hooked up a 25K wood chipper (they were in balaclavas). As they drove off one of his managers drove in and realised what was going on, he blocked the exit and they got out with crow bars.

The chipper had a tracker and it came to rest in the notorious 'site'. They gave the police all of the info including the Mondeo reg (that was known to them) and they were reluctant to do anything.

It is a very long and frightening story but he eventually recovered it.

He is still having similar incidents regularly.

I am not sure if it is a small minority that give them a bad name....... They do seem to be completely lawless and the police seem reluctant to address it. I read an article once from a reporter who went under cover and got involved with large scale caravan theft.
