It used to be if you got right behind them it was easy to zip along the road in the dirty air, now though you would have to be flying to keep up with them and on a road bike but the damage they are doing to the roads and verges is beyond a joke. Road tax them, they even run on cheap diesel

Road Tax??

VED doesn't pay for the roads.

Maybe you are just slower...

I used to be really into them, but not any more.

I'm an ex-tractor fan.

The same farmers that help feed the nation and clear the roads in bad weather?

Be patient just like a car behind a push bike.

No, not them. It’s the other type he’s talking about. Those that time their tractor driving and herding of cows to coincide with rush hour.

Easy mistake it's at least it's not the ones always on the phone dropping hedge clippings everywhere.

I flippin love tractors, to the point of obsession. I'm now on subscription to Classic Tractor and lusting after an 8210...

Can't help with the rant I'm afraid.

Is this a 'what fast tractor' thread? Great, I'm looking to replace my Passat and a tractor would be ideal for potholes round here. Cheap diesel too 😁

And that's all down to faster tractors?

A cyclist talking about road tax ..... what hope have we got at educating the general population that road tax was abolished in 1937 if we can't educate ourselves. It's Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) FFS. It's already been mentioned that VED doesn't pay for roads.

Yes, tractors have got bigger and faster, although verges tend to get damaged when another (smaller) road user refuses to reverse to a sensible passing place. There are two sides to every argument, try to investigate both sides before coming to a conclusion as it will help you to put across a more reasoned argument. Also the farmer probably owns the verge, so what he does with it is his prerogative, I don't believe there's a law that says he needs to keep it pretty for you to cycle past.

Yes the diesel is cheap, you could force them all to use white diesel (same stuff, different tax) but then you'd pay more for your food. Then you'd be moaning that your weekly shop was costing you a fortune and aren't all those farmers rich.

I'm glad you got that rant off your chest but please stop to think how these ideas would actually work in the real world and learn a bit more tolerance for your fellow man.

As for sharp stones, are they not there due to the type of surfacing that's done as councils tend to use tar and gravel rather than the more expensive and smoother asphalt. As far as I'm aware newer tractors haven't changed the physical make up of mud to make it sharper.

PS. I'm not a farmer.

My mate has a David Brown 990 which is a great little bit of kit.  In a strange twist of fate we’ve just rented an industrial unit in Meltham Mills which is where it was built over 50 years ago....sort of a going home for tractors story I s’pose...

Did you hear about the magic tractor?

It turned into a field.

Well alright, someone might not have heard that a thousand times!

Rather than this be yet another pointless rant about stuff we don't control and won't be able to change, can we just post pictures of tractors?

Here's my wife driving our friend's grey Fergy around earlier this summer. Amazed she didn't get her legs covered in oil.

Here is some up to date info on tractors  from Harrys Garage

And some  about the Combine harvester - quite a good road trip later in video

including a bit where a cyclist decides not to try to get in front at a junction,

a very wise move.

My son (4) was excited but very offended the other day to see a tractor with big wheels front & back going down the road.

Tractors are meant to have small wheels at the front!
