Just got a moderator message on Dpreview. The site will be locked on the 10th April

This website is a giant. Obviously digital photography is a declining market but it’s still a shock. The site is owned by Amazon but editorialy independent.

It’s partly relevant here as it suggests that editorial content can’t be supported by adverts any longer. Which fits with much of what Mark has said here

I’m on 4751 posts and one suspension at dpreview. That’s more than here

Sad for those involved and It’s one if those sites I used to spend a lot of time on.

But phones really have killed separate cameras off for all but the keenest of photographers.

The market seems to have just moved on, which is different to here as cycling is still a popular leisure activity.

Very sad. Spent a lot of time on dpreview when I got into photography 15 odd years ago. Decent forum too, if a little US based. They were trying hard with video reviews and reviewing smartphones, but yea, the 'camera' is dying off and has been replaced with smartphones now.

Glad you clarified that this is/was a photography website.

I feel that prosumer audience is now on Youtube/Tiktok and to a lesser extend podcasts. It's just a modal shift - the audience is still there

Yes it's a shame for websites though! And those friendly giants that disappear because they didn't pivot

Pivot to what, though?

Good news everyone the powers that be in Amazon have sold the site. Details here  https://tidbits.com/2023/06/21/dpreview-acquired-by-gear-patrol/

The site is owned by Amazon but editorialy independent

Independent , unbiased reviews isn't really Amazon's thing.

I never saw any evidence that they weren’t objective reviews

I know a guy who works there (rides MTB, been on group rides), they're very definitely independent and objective, bu that's not really a selling point for Amazon. Happy to hear that the deal has worked out and the future looks brighter
