my cousin went up to Wimbledon to visit her friend. she's been there several times before and has always parked in the same spot. except yesterday she parked there and when she returned 45 minutes later the car was gone.
phoned up police and they told her that it had been towed.
why had it been towed?
because the street had been closed off to parking because of Ramadan!
turns out there is a mosque around the corner and the spaces were being kept for those visiting the mosque!
do christians get this sort of treatment around easter?
**** me. and it cost her £255 to get her car back. not sure who she should be more pissed at.... the mosque (for asking for such favours) or the council and police (for agreeing to them).
does this happen elsewhere?
should she kick up a stink? i said she should write to the MP and council.
A good story for the Daily Wail
This could get very interesting indeed. Personally, as much as I'd like her to kick up a stink I doubt she'll get very far.
so she ignored or did not see the no parking signs?
Firstly the objective: if there weren't any signs then irrespective of the reasons for the restrictions she can appeal.
But:
not sure who she should be more pissed at.... the mosque (for asking for such favours) or the council and police (for agreeing to them).
Wow.
Parking restriction for events happen all the time. Outside my local church was coned off yesterday for a wedding.
Did she ignore the signs?
8" square parking signs. as she said, she'd parked there often enough in the past and once you're use to a routine of parking up in the same spot for the past six months you don't check the parking signs each time you park.
turns out the existing signs had been covered with new signs detailing the new parking times.
edit:
nothing 'coned' off. street looked as it did previously - other than the new signage.
so she ignored or did not see the no parking signs?
even so, the mosque having that power is ridiculous.
Temporary parking restrictions are enforced for all sorts of reasons, football, music festivals, MTB events and religious festivals. If it wasn't signed complain, if it was then suck it up.

Why should she 'kick up a stink'? She either ignored 'No Parking' and got towed legally or there were no signs and she can appeal and get her money back.
It's just a parking restriction ffs it happens all the time for a variety of reasons.
SHOULD HAVE USED PUBLIC TRANSPORT..........
This is nothing to do with religion. its to do with adequate signage... Roads around a church near me are regularly made temporarily 'no parking' for all sorts of events; weddings, funerals, various god bothering stuff. Meh.
alpin - that
is extremely harsh.turns out the existing signs had been covered with new signs detailing the new parking times.
float - Memberso she ignored or did not see the no parking signs?

Everyone has that power you idiot.
So a street is closed to parking with no visible notices/signs?
Or did she ignore them and hope it would be OK.
If only it had been closed for a church fete, you could have blamed Christians and cheered up woppit.
Is she one of those thick Caucasians that dark skinned chaps laugh about while plotting jihad against red top reading infidels?
So a church should not be allowed to do the same thing? See Jambos post.
We have road restrictions, parking restrictions and closures all the time around here for different events.
The issue here is her lack of observation meaning she parked where she should not have
She was completely at fault, ignorance is no defence.
Due to the local carnival we had parking restrictions around one of the main parks in town yesterday which caused traffic chaos
I'm not clowning about, it's hard to juggle priorities you know
there really are some neanderthal rascist monkeys in the world..
So it wasn't "No parking"? If the people visiting the Mosque were allowed to use the spaces.
How did the police know who was who?
Seems very strange. They put no parking signs near where I live when the sports club is having a big event. But the people visiting the event are not allowed to park either.

i lol'd.
sorry.. just re-read my first post.....
not sure who she should be more pissed at.... the mosque (for asking for such favours) or the council and police (for agreeing to them).
should read:

i don't get the 'racist' bit in this thread ? are the peolple that towed the car away 'other', or is it the people that made the decision to restrict parking that are 'other'.
either way, i don't see any reason to get pissy with the people obseving ramadan as it's clearly not their fault, so the op can't be getting all racist on their asses. unless of course he's directing his anger in the completely wrong place.
confused, devon.
Daft question, how did the tow truck crew know she wasn't a muslimist?
The other cars would have had tickets or something in the windows?
SHOULD HAVE USED PUBLIC TRANSPORT..........
😯 You mean a bus? Are you mad?
Have none of you ever experienced permit parking?
even so, the mosque having that power is ridiculous.
The car park outside Mud Dock in Bristol was full of fairground rides yesterday and there was no parking allowed. I think there is some sort of secret society that controls such things!
Oh - no - there isn't. Just dull people with sad parochial views and people who can't read signs.
(The Bristol Harbour Festival appears to be the Grand High Poobah of Powerfulness if having 'power' in these things is concerned. 🙄 )
Whats a bus???? Are they those great big box things that travel round our way with no one on them burning loads of diesel?
I agree Trailmonkey.
Where does the racism come in?
The only way it could be racist would be to suggest Muslims should not be given the same support for their freedom to worship as other faiths.
Alpin - what are you/your cousin angry about? Do you think the parking restrictions were only put in place because it was a Mosque and the same support wouldn't be given to a Christian church?
anyone can close the road for a fee. they were just more organised than the native god botherers.
Oh if only Diana was here
I'm still confused.
Was it "No parking" or parking for Mosque goers only?
Closing a road and stopping parking altogether is completely difference.
Did they issue parking permits for a defined period?
German Troll
there really are some neanderthal rascist monkeys in the world..
Muslims are not a single race of people, therefore the objection cannot technically be 'racist'.
I'm not sure of the word that describes prejudice on the grounds of religious belief but if it's anything it would be that.
What then is the reason the Mosque wanted the parking restricted? Is there a practical reason, i.e. they were planning some sort of street festival? Or is it because it offends their Islamic-ness?
What do the new signs say/look like?
i'm not angry.... i don't even have a car.
she, however, is really pissed off.
and i didn't say it was rascist, only that it could be interpreted so (this being STW).
she told me about it this morning and i thought i'd post it up here to see what the STW forumites would make of it.
that is all.
i have no more information other than what i said in the first post.
Write to the mosque explain what happened, they may send a cheque to cover the cost. You never know.
this is an outrage next thing you know shops and banks will be closed for other fantastical religous festivals like xmas or easter
will the madness never end?
I used to live 100m away from 'old' Leicester City Football ground. On match days people's cars got towed from our street all the time. Road was not closed as the few folk with front drives could still go in and out. Everyone else had to find somewhere to put their car once a fortnight.
What if you were used to parking in our street to go to visit or work in the nearby factories, hospital, FE college etc, (no residents permits or staying limits when i lived there at least) and then one day you did it on a match day?
Just for clarity. Parking restrictions and the enforcement of parking fines and/or towing are nothing to do with the police (with a very few exceptions)
What then is the reason the Mosque wanted the parking restricted? Is there a practical reason, i.e. they were planning some sort of street festival? Or is it because it offends their Islamic-ness?
What part of their 'Islamic-ness' (wtf?) would it offend? Perhaps if you read the OP you might have seen this little clue:
because the street had been closed off to parking because of Ramadan!turns out there is a mosque around the corner and the spaces were being kept for those visiting the mosque!
What if you were used to parking in our street to go to visit or work in the nearby factories, hospital, FE college etc, (no residents permits or staying limits when i lived there at least) and then one day you did it on a match day?
Just a guessing but maybe find somewhere else to park?
I used to live on a street where the parking restrictions would change based on whether Arsenal were playing that day. I've had temporary restrictions where I've lived for various festivals, music events, running and cycle races, and even neighbours moving house so needing to park a truck outside.
Absolutely no excuse for not reading the signs that apply to the bay. If she ignored them, tough. If it was either not signed, or inadequately marked, then she might have grounds for appeal. Regularly using it and not bothering to look isn't.
Just a guessing but maybe find somewhere else to park?
Exactly. (it was rhetorical question) If this was a car being towed away because of the football, it would be a non-thread. I don't see how 'extraordinary' (not as in 'wierd' but as in 'not the same as the usual weekly/daily restrictions') parking restictions for a religious festival is any different.
yet another reason added to my list to emigrate!
Do we know if this was to allow visitors to the mosque to park (unlikely) or to stop visitors to the mosque parking there?
