Not for me but my son. Hes 23 months and has started to ask to sit on the toilet and has done a couple of pees on it. What is the best way to continue from here, nappy off and accept accidents or just take it off when he asks to go?

Nappy off, pants on (so he feels wet if he pees) and have a potty in the room.

That worked for my two boys

I don't have a definitive answer but just to say, expect the worst. This was yesterday, and yes, that is.

Yes

Serious response is yes, both, he'll work it out and there will be accidents. Don't forget seat up / seat down conditioning if he has any hope of holding down a long term relationship with the opposite sex in the future....

Does he want to sit on the toilet because it's fun or because he doesn't like having a wet/dirty nappy?

If you think he's ready then pick a week when you'll all be around the house a lot, potty in the living room, nappy off. Expect plenty of accidents but just reassure him it's fine and make a big fuss when he uses the potty/toilet.

We used to reward ours with a sticker that went on a chart, 5 stickers and they get a treat (biscuit, conker, whatever really). We still use the sticker thing, just for other stuff now.

When he's ready for poos, we would sit with them and read a book with them so they're not rushing and wanting to get off before they're done.

Whatever you do, commit to it. Don't put a nappy back on if you're going to the shop, just carry a potty and change of clothes everywhere. If he has a an accident don't worry.

Edit: Yes ^^^ put pants on. Our had Mr Men pants, no one wants to wee on Mr Bump!

Don't rush it. 23 months is quite early. I see people having a lot of trouble because their kids aren't ready. It takes a long time for them to develop the sensation of having a full bladder so if you try too early they won't know what the hell you are talking about. "Do you want to go to the toilet?" "Umm yes that sounds like a fun game/no, why would I?"

With our first one she was about 3, so her mental faculties were sufficient to understand stuff like holding it in til you get home or whatever, we had very few accidents.

Just need to grasp the nettle and accept accidents, they can get the hang of it quickly in some cases.
Going through it at the moment with our daughter (2 1/2) - she got the wee-ing sorted out almost instantly. poos, on the other hand, are a work in progress.

When we first got the potty, my little girl loved it. Pees and poos just fine, then after a week or two she refused to go on it any more. We left it for a while and trying to get her back on it. We've got a star chart, in the first day she got two, and one the next day but hasn't touched it since (coming up for a week).

Not sure what to do. She loves stickers (they're like baby crack) and she has picked a treat that she really wants (like super baby crack) but she doesn't want to pee on the potty. It doesn't help that she has the stubbornness of her Dad and the patience of her Mum.

Might try the nappy off thing, wooden(~ish) or tiled floors in most rooms so accidents shouldn't be too bad.

Yes, it's Nutella.

Thanks! That was a close one.

I think 23 months is OK. Both of our boys started at about 2. The youngest is 3 in December and has been fine for months now, goes the through the night too (although sometimes we still lift him at 11ish just in case).

Edit: It does depend though, if they're not ready it's not worth trying to force it.

Yeah 23 months is keen. We left it a bit later and with the aid of pull-ups managed to avoid shit on the table!

Eldest more or less did it for himself @ 30 months, including overnight.

Middle likewise, a little younger.

Third, 3 1/2 and still revelling in his own feculent, but we are sticking at it, t'is the only way.

Don't scold, positive reinforcement on using the toilet etc. Though I'd agree 2 years maybe be a bit young, there is physical development that needs to happen that does vary a lot.

We didn't bother with a potty, just straight on to the toilet, if you are out and about you can hold them in a sitting position.

Definitely get a good stock of stickers and a chart or similar to put them on.

this, and relax with it, they're just accidents 🙂

when they're asking to do it they're ready, so accidents should be few and far between 😉

my 2yr old little girl insists that you go first when going to the toilet 'you first daddy' and then tells me to sit down (like a girl!) then when she's doing the business she narrates it....

lilJek: Oh another poo Daddy

Jek: Okay, are you done?

lilJek: Nooo not yet, woops *looks between legs* another poopoo Daddy *strainnnnnnnn* *little face goes slightly red* 'PLOP'

Jek: Great!

When you have that conversation with your wife about when/if to start a family, these are not things you consider.

and then tells me to sit down (like a girl!)

I have always made my lads do this at home and end up doing it myself now (most of the time)!

Just like stabilizers, once nappies are off they never go back on (except night pull-ups). We managed both boys within a week. I don't believe in sitting them on a potty for hours. We just put them in pants, left them to say when they needed to go and sat them on the toliet (rapidly) where they held themselves up to stop falling in.

You'll need a good supply of pants and trousers. Do not plan to go out that week - It cost us a new pair of Clarks shoes (Do you have a dry pair? 😳 ).

Best done in the summer.

We didn't do any toilet training as such. They both just decided to stop wearing nappies and start using the toilet at some point. It was a complete non event. I think the whole reason some people have problems with toilet training is that they try to do it when they want rather than when the kids want. If you just leave it till the kids want to/can do it them it's easy.

I think our oldest was 3 but the second one stopped quite early ~30 months perhaps. We had stacks of big nappies we just gave away.

Young MasterG was around 22 - 23 months and just decided he'd had enough of nappies. We has one or two minor accidents when he (we) just weren't fast enough. But her was dry (day AND night) from that point on - and yes, we kept a potty in his bedroom.

Little MissG, on the other hand, was day-time dry at 3. She is now 6 and still wears "PJ pants" at night and is wet most nights. Me and MrsG are at a loss.

As for sitting down for a pee - what's the big problem? I always sit for a pee at home as I don't have a urinal. It's just a toilet after-all.

thegenralist +1

Didnt push it, did say by the age of 'x' should be out of nappies. I think Jnr FD was nearer 3 before he stopped, but he just started asking to use the toilet. No hassles, not many accidents at all.

I've ended up sitting down for no1s most of the time anyway, more time to play Candy Crush! and a bit o' piece & quiet.

I think it's more a 'little problem' that leads to poor aim and hence defeat in the toilet standing department

Not really, as a urinal is right in front of you and very hard to miss; unless the "little fellow" has a kink in it

When ours started to try and go in anything (cat water bowl/random cereal bowl) at less than two we thought best to start the training proper. Three months later, all seems to be going ok, although he has not successfully done a richard yet. Trying more nappy free time and big boy pants.
