My petrol mower is dead so I need a new one for my medium lawn with some very rough areas.

Do mulching mowers leave a residue of grass over the lawn or do they truly chop it up small and blow it back into the lawn? I don't want to have to rake anything up as I'd rather just use a grass collector.

depends how long you leave it between mows.

if you do it very regularly so the cuttings are very short it's ok, any longer and the results stick to anythign you put on it when wet.

Just bought a mulching mower myself and it does seem to work.

I was advised though to by a dedicated mulching mower with a round bell shaped cutting deck and proper mulching blade.

Don’t be tempted to buy a combi type - mulch and collect with a mulching plug as apparently they don’t work.

Only take a third off the grass height at a time but if you do have areas where the grass grows quicker, going back over the cuttings again seems to work to get rid of them.
