Can I do this with the above camera? It doesn't have a built in function but can I hook it up to my MacBook Pro and somehow get the computer to operate the camera?

Yes the Canon software has the ability to do timelapse (EOS Utility I think).
Did a couple with mine and it seemed fairly straight forward enough.
Yep, install EOS Utility (download from Canon if you don't already have it). Set it up for remote shooting, then you can use the builtin time-lapse shooting in the software.

Agreed - that's the third attempt at outdoor time lapse. Ended up with a tube of clear polythene, the flower head tied to 3 stakes and the camera shooting down from a height of about 2m. It's not easy! Having a lot more success with my indoor projects (currently shooting some runner beans sprouting).
