Fanny playing footie eh. Whatever next? Do they do it in sexy outfits?
The Pilot - MemberSadly JimJam, everything you say is true. Do me a favour and don't reply to this message. I already have you down as an odious little man and you don't need to do anything more to prove this.
Do you a favour? Why's that? So you have to justify your completely misplaced, unprovoked and unfounded ad-hominem insult? Nice way to jump to an unfounded conclusion. Stick your impression of me.
Misogynist/rapist/Trump/Nazi in 5,4,3,2....
Cougar - ModeratorI didn't say it's an "epidemic," but to suggest that it's not a problem is, well, problematic.
Cougar it's a 6 page thread and at a glance I can see one instance of this pervasive societal level sexual harrasment involved a 14 year old girl being pestered for sex by her 15 year old boyfriend, another woman being shouted at for bad parking and another being told to smile by a "builder" who was staring at her.
While none of those things is right, or correct they don't amount to a culture of abuse and misogyny. Every thread on this forum that brings up this issue (of which there are many) is negatively pre-loaded from the get go with the assumption that we live in a patriarchal hell for women. Like the TDF Girls thread I suggest we all go and ask or wives how much sexual harassment they suffered today, or how much they care to watch women's football and take it from there.
Struggling to understand your point The Pilot.
You still seem to be making a rather massive leap to me... and I think I'm on your side!
mefty: interesting, will have to investigate the differences some day myself. I thought they were very similar.
It was implied in the commentary you can't use your hand in Shinty whereas you can in Hurling and obviously the sticks are different otherwise I wouldn't have noticed.
Misogynist/rapist/Trump/Nazi in 5,4,3,2....
The worst kind of Trump Nazi 🙁
But you gotta punch them when you see them!
Especially if they are female.
The Scots took a good game and made a bollix of it. Like they did with the Gaelic language. 😀
Jamie - MemberEspecially if they are female.
Only if they identify as non binary gender queer.
GrahamS, it's you who's making the leap, not me.
Jimjam, I think you need to seek professional help.
R4 covered this earlier this week, men not allowing their wives or girlfriends to play football, others turning up just to ogle women in shorts with their legs out, falling over and getting muddy. Totally failing to appreciate the skill, effort and competitive element. I was shocked.
Oh no wait... it was their WW1 set drama, Home Front. You know, from 100 years ago. Nice to see some on here still behave like it's 1917.
The Pilot - MemberJimjam, I think you need to seek professional help.
Could you recommend a plumber? But how did you know the toilet in my 6th bathroom wasn't flushing correctly?
Could you recommend a doctor, OLMJimjam? You would surely know that I would crack a rib with that hilarious comment.
The Pilot - MemberCould you recommend a doctor, OLMJimjam? You would surely know that I would crack a rib with that hilarious comment.
What's your point? What are you trying to say? What justification have you for your earlier comments? What's wrong with my mental health? Why am I "an odious little man"? How tall are you? Do you have an opinion? Can you back it up?

Lol! You funny little (or big) thing, OL/BMJimjam!
[quote=GrahamS ]jimjam, without wanting to drag this light-hearted thread in that direction (as we've had more than enough of that recently) I'd suggest a selection bias there. Perhaps instead of asking "Do I know anyone who could harass women or commit sexual assault?" you should ask "Do I know anyone who has suffered harassment or sexual assault?"
Indeed - I'm not sure why the thread has to be dragged in that direction, but somebody I know well commented on FB about the amount of harassment she's been on the receiving end of - she's somebody I trust implicitly, and I can't believe she's doing anything special to attract such harassment, which leads me to suspect it happens to the vast majority of women.
Anyway back on topic, this seems the sort of thing which should happen in more countries: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/oct/07/norway-football-pay-male-female-internationals-equally
Did it occur to the OP that Men's football was probably crap to watch 50 years ago? Give us women a chance to catch up on the skills level, we're a few decades behind!!!
The Pilot - MemberLol! You funny little (or big) thing, OL/BMJimjam!
Ah you have no point but you thought you'd bravely step up and insult someone you didn't know (and their mental health) based on no information and no experience presumably to ingratiate yourself to a group of internet strangers. Brave.
Completely irrelevant and completely tangentially I'll just take this opportunity to remind everyone that Harvey Weinstein was a left wing darling and well known champion of women's rights.

Graham, sorry I missed your post. I would agree that there is some degree of selection bias in terms of most right thinking people not choosing friends and acquaintances who aren't sexually abusive - how could there not be. Furthermore I think it's probably safe to assume that most men of our age are going to have much larger male freind groups than female and so any sample groups they draw from based along gender lines would be heavily skewed.
EDIT Obvious troll is obvious
[s]
I know we have reduced it to merely repressing and harassing them insteadwomen aren't oppressed in this society
YEAH PROGRESS
Straw man the argument is they experience things that a man doe snot from the glass ceiling, lower pay to sexual harasment - you know all these things are provable I assumepre-loaded from the get go with the assumption that we live in a patriarchal hell for women.
I have never ever met a woman who cannot list numerous examples where they have experienced sexual harassment. No one has claimed its daily -= is it not a problem til its daily ?[/s]I suggest we all go and ask or wives how much sexual harassment they suffered today.
Are we down to the usual last four again?
Back 4? I thought we were playing 5 3 1 today?

C'mon Junkyard, you're better than a troll.

The gang is all here!
....and all male.

What's your point, caller?
Jimmy Savile was a well known champion of children's charities. Remind me, how did that pan out?
you're better than a troll.
even your insults are of playground standard
I know you are but what I am
Deary me

I reject your binary assignment of gender ...just too rigid

When people start massively over compensating for something it might suggest an ulterior motive and/or guilt?
You've got me there, OL/BMJimjam. Bang to rights! You've seen right through me. Sir, I salute you!
As for HW, I think we can all agree that he is the definition of a
champion of women's rights
I'm off to bask in my new ingratiated status now.

I admire your intelligence and your courage.
Don’t forget Rolf and his front of caring for sick animals. I bet he kicked puppies just to get more authentic ‘cute puppy crying’ shots for the camera, the sick bastard.

You want to see what the English did to rugby. They don't even use the severed head of their enemies any more!

Sad. But true.
When people start massively over compensating for something it might suggest an ulterior motive and/or guilt?
Sure, which is what I was saying. Though now you're appearing to suggest that because someone isn't openly a massive misogynist, they're clearly a rapist?
People can present any image they like in public. This could be because they're manipulative bastards, or because they're decent human beings. Who's to know? The ones who are openly neanderthals, at least they're easy to spot. Again, what's your point? If you're not implying what I just said then it's just whataboutery.
Personally, what I think is sad but true, is that people feel the need to start threads such as these in the first place.
Indeed.
Absolutely nothing against women....I have three daughters and wife
Is quickly becoming the misogynist's "I'm not racist, but"

Have you seen Clare Balding's documentary When Football Banned Women? Offers a different perspective on the idea that women's football is playing catch up with the men's game.
Cougar - Moderatornow you're appearing to suggest that because someone isn't openly a massive misogynist, they're clearly a rapist?
I don't believe that I was, what I was implying was that someone who insists on a hyperbolic fake reality probably has an agenda.
If you're not implying what I just said then it's just whataboutery.
Sometimes whataboutery is whataboutery, other times it's context.
I always assumed that in these matches the Scots were playing shinty and the Irish were playing hurling.
It was certainly the implication they played combined rules; like the Aussies and Irish do for Gaelic Football/AFL. DD will no doubt pop up to brag about how the amateur Irish frequently beat the professional aussies.
Oh no wait... it was their WW1 set drama, Home Front. You know, from 100 years ago. Nice to see some on here still behave like it's 1917.
Like Graham S said previously about another poster this is unfair. It is perfectly reasonable to argue that ratings should be a more important factor to the BBC that its public service remit and therefore they should focus on what's popular. Afterall its an argument the BBC has internally, by all accounts, continuously. Whilst I don't agree, it is not an unreasonable position.
Likewise watching women's sport is a personal thing. I can understand why football aficionados might not enjoy watching the women's game as to my untutored eye, there is a large difference in relative level. However, the cricket the women batsman play is much closer to the game played professionally by men when I was young to that of the modern day player. Because the bowling is slower you can actually see the ball if you are watching side on live.
I would encourage people to watch it, especially live it is dirt cheap, they may get incites they didn't anticipate. However if they don't enjoy it, don't judge them.
The Pilot - MemberPersonally, what I think is sad but true, is that people feel the need to start threads such as these in the first place.
Cougar - ModeratorIndeed.
Read between the lines and the OP isn't about women's football it's about national broadcasters making decisions to create or construct a false normal.
What kind of society are we trying to construct and how do we go about it?
