I hate it when I watch the TV and the sports news comes on talking about football, players and managers that I have no idea who they are, no knowledge of the games being played as if it is important and I should give a monkeys, which I don't.

Also, why is my BBC news feed telling about someone I have never heard of 'going into the jungle' which I assume is referring to a TV show that I have no interest in. This is not news.

We need more obscure, poorly-followed sports on telly, not fewer. Bring back World of Sport and Kabbadi.

If you're OK with an online substitute, might I suggest Reddit's take on the mighty Ocho?

Hurrah, glad someone's finally said it. I've watched more than the odd women's football match and it's mostly rubbish. generally school boy level defending, it's embarrassing. As for the women's Ashes give me break, since Sky took over the cricket hardly anyone cares about the proper Ashes, let alone the women's version.

I have no problem with media covering any sport but stuff that makes the mainstream news, the level of coverage should reflect the true level of interest.

The womens football attracts crowds on par with the National league.

When do you ever hear any news of Gateshead's latest transfer on the Radio 4 news?

Cobblers. If the beeb just pandered to populist choice, the news would cover nothing more than who's eating weird bits of animals in a jungle, which Essex or Chelsea based reality muppet was shagging which and, for the oldsters, why everything's shit and was better in the olden days. If that's what you want, the Daily Mail is available on paper and online.

That said, the (women's) Euro semi-final got 4 million viewers which was more than Celebrity Big Brother, so it's hardly an obscure minority sport with no interest.

But the standard of play was still embarrassingly awful.

But the standard of play was still embarrassingly awful.

Even if it was, surely the best way to remedy that is to get more girls into playing football?

And a good way to do that is for them to see other women playing football on telly to provide some positive role models.

Sounds like something a public service broadcaster might do...

Doesn't stop Scottish football and Welsh rugby getting shown on the telly.

I don’t understand watching sports full stop. I do think that women’s sports should get the same coverage though. Why shouldn’t they?

Fishing’s really popular isn’t it? Why isn’t there any competitive fishing on the telly? Bastards

Tam Cowan bbc Scotland was suspended for 2 weeks after his cheeky remarks in the daily record in 2013 was all about womens football that was played at Motherwell
Back at the bbc and it was much worse than probably David Moyes was caught saying or even Andy Gray and Richard keys

Then women's cricket....talking about The Ashes matches that no one even knew was going on, let alone were interested!

You should have watched or listened to it - was an excellent series.

As for football, I don't give a stuff about it whether played by men or women. I'm sure some people do though.

I agree with the OP - I couldn't care less about the women's football result. Did they play a match, can't say I'd noticed?

Mind you the same goes for the men's football.

Women's cricket though, some impressive skills on display there. Especially from Sarah Taylor the keeper.

Is it? Really? Who decides what the social engineering should be aiming at?
I never ever thought I'd be saying this but perhaps the Daily Heil has it right after all.

There is on Sky.

But on the more general point I think it is a perfectly sensible for the BBC to promote women's sport as this fits in with their wider remit. However, it is worth asking why it is the women's versions of men's sport seem to get the coverage rather than say Netball which has much higher participation levels than Rugby or Cricket. It may simply be becausr those sports are pumping a lot of money into the women's game.

I have mixed views on watching women's sport which are full of contradictions as I am quite evangelical on participation. Can't watch soccer, but not a big watcher of the men's game. Can't watch Rugby football even though this was very much my game, just can't get to grips with women being that physically aggressive. But really enjoy watching hockey and cricket, which my daughter does, and I regard going to the Women's World Cup final as one of the best days out I have had at a sporting event - top 5 certainly.

As far as Sarah Orchard is concerned, didn't really notice her which is a compliment - but she is not allowed to takeover from the king of Montage, the great Eddie Butler, one of the best voices in sport.

Is it? Really?

Well these sorts of things the BBC Charter and Agreement might cover it:

..should encourage people to explore new subjects and participate in new activities through partnerships with educational, sporting and cultural institutions...

..to broaden sports coverage, to better support sports which currently receive less broadcast coverage...

..the BBC must have particular regard to the need to
reflect underrepresented communities.

..should accurately and authentically represent and portray the lives of the people of the United Kingdom today, and raise awareness of the different cultures and alternative viewpoints that make up its society.

Who decides what the social engineering should be aiming at?

Director General + the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport I suppose.

I'm guessing a number of contributors to this thread are trolls but, even if they are or are not, it serves to demonstrate why everybody from Harvey Weinstein to the slightly too touchy-feely guy at the office can get away with what they do.

Shinty doesn't get nearly enough coverage. There's a sport.

Your case would be more persuasive if you posted a link to a shinty game.

Given that men earn more than women it's a safe bet that they contribute more to the licence fee too. That means that women are already over-represented on the BBC.

Huh?

The video entitled "Firewood! Scotland player breaks shinty stick off Irish player", posted by the GaelicShintyHurling channel, featuring big advertising hoardings in the background for Shinty.com, with the BBC commentator saying "Ooof! First Shinty stick broken this afternoon" doesn't actually feature shinty?

Well there you go. You can understand my confusion. Clearly it needs more coverage so I can tell the difference. 😀

Despite being one of the SJW White Knight libtard snowflakes I'm struggling to see the connection here. Some people don't like watching women's football therefore rapists?

I agree there is far to much sport on telly that I'm not interested in. It has nothing to do with gender though.

You saw the recent Mumsnet thread we linked to here, right? For your convenience:

Cougar, I don't sexually harass women, nor do I know anyone in my group of friends and acquaintances, or even in my fairly wide and vague group of FB friends who I would consider to be capable of sexual assault. Mumsnet is a big forum and a thread with 30? 50? Contributors does not an epidemic make.

Men aren't monsters, we don't live in the 1800s, women aren't oppressed in this society, I'm not geetee and we're not doing this again 😕

It is game played under combined rules so a hybrid of Shinty and Hurling - hence they are using different sticks - I have wondered for some time what the differences between the two games were, so was interested in seeing a game of shinty, having seen a few hurling games - I was severely disappointed.

Sadly JimJam, everything you say is true. Do me a favour and don't reply to this message. I already have you down as an odious little man and you don't need to do anything more to prove this.

GrahamS, you've made quite a leap there. Not what I was saying at all.

Nor me. Doesn't mean they don't though, or it doesn't happen. How would I know?

I didn't say it's an "epidemic," but to suggest that it's not a problem is, well, problematic. That thread isn't just talking about one-off occurrences. On the OP's second post she says, "That said, I can count hundreds of times I’ve had inappropriate comments, “cheeky” gropes, experiences of being made to feel the least relevant person in room when I was the most experienced." (emphasis mine). And I'm sorry, but "once" is too often.

Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread, I'm going to go make food.

jimjam, without wanting to drag this light-hearted thread in that direction (as we've had more than enough of that recently) I'd suggest a selection bias there. Perhaps instead of asking "Do I know anyone who could harass women or commit sexual assault?" you should ask "Do I know anyone who has suffered harassment or sexual assault?"

mefty: interesting, will have to investigate the differences some day myself. I thought they were very similar.

"Do I know anyone who has suffered harassment or sexual assault?"

It'd be interesting to see some numbers behind that, but I'd wager it's a majority of women (and a surprising percentage of men too for that matter, ever been in a pub with a hen party?). A more pertinent question might be, "do I know any women who haven't?"

Sorry. Food.

Quite right. It was only a joke, girls. Stop being so touchy. Only a bit of banter.
Time to sweep it all under the carpet again clearly.
