Actual useful purpose in life? Like if they were wiped out by Tickomea or something, what or who would suffer?
Just took one of the dogs eyebrow that she picked up near Arisaig & it made me wonder.

In another universe, it's not Aliens vs Predators, it's Ticks vs Midges.

No - not quite that bad. More like Mussolini and Blair...

No, because the lord gave mankind the gift of free will but ticks are part of brute creation.

Ticks and midgies too for that matter keep the Highlands relatively empty for those of us that will put up with them.

Well, the last photo is a water-boatman, not really much threat to the comfort of humans.

Neither is a Pond Skater, which is what that actually is. 😆

That's a pond skater rather than a water boatman isn't it?

Pond skaters are, however, a major threat to other pond life. Ferocious things!

Given that 99% of species have/will become extinct eventually, and that the world keeps on turning regardless, it's fairly safe to say that there's not really any 'point' to any creature, human included. One could, of course, extol the virtues and benefits of any species, but that is an entirely separate consideration.
