I was on the A35 entering Bournemouth about an hour ago and one of those mobile speed camera vans was parked up at the side of the road.

This was approximately 150 metres after the speed limit went from 70 to 50, the road was extremely congested and I saw the van when I was about 30 metres away and was under the speed limit by the time I passed it.

My questions are...

1) What's their typical effective range?

2) I was initially travelling at 60 just before I spotted it, there were at least 4 or 5 cars in each lane ahead of me, most of them were also speeding. So, would the camera have been busy recording the details of the vehicle in closest proximity to it or can it track multiple targets at any given time?

I've got no points on my licence at the moment (for the first time in years), hoping I haven't just buggered my clean slate!

Their range is about 1/2 a mile i think.

To put your mind at rest they have to aim at a particular vehicle to get a picture and reading on them so if the road was busy and you were just over and braked then the chances are you will be okay.

I had one get me a few years ago. I tried to be clever and ask for proof... they sent a great picture of me and my Dad and the point where they took the pic was well before I had seen them.

My wife got taken from behind (Fnarr Fnarr) by a mobile speed camera going form a 30mph to a 40 mph zone, dual carriageway.

Basically accelerating to 40 before she had got to the sign.

We didn't know they could take you from behind!

range is up to 1km

If it was really busy they might have missed you. If you reckon you were doing 50, you were probably doing less than that maybe as low as 45

They have 14 days to serve the NIP to the registered keeper, if its a company car that will go to the lease company/transport manager first.

If you do get an NIP you have 28 days to respond to the S172 request (this is where you name yourself as the guilty party) DO NOT miss this deadline or you will be charged with failure to furnish which is a HUGE fine and 6 points and a massive loading on your insurance

Don't ask for the photos as evidence or proof, you can ask for them to assist in IDing the driver They are not obliged to give you evidence. This will not stop the 28 day clock on the S172

If you have been caught and its your 1st offense you will very probably be offered a speed awareness course which is about £60-£80 but no points

pepipoo is a great resource for advice on these matters...

You know, you're right - why can't they do something about congestion ? 👿

Used a laser gun before . The range is amazing , and i can easily see the 1km distance being accurate . Braking is pointless . By the time you have checked your speedo and / or braked your speed will have been recorded. It about 1/2 a second , with a good 'bounce' off a headlight or number plate . TBH by the time you have seen the 'Safety Camera Partnership' van you will have been clocked .
Speed awareness course usually only offered if a few mph over speed limit ( asked about when i was done at 42 in a 30. no chance ) 1st offence too , although other forces might have slightly different guide lines .

A while ago while blasting over to llandegla on an open empty road in Wales I sailed under a laser van at ~85 indicated. Didn't even think about the van on the bridge until it was too late (normally don't have such worries as my D is so slow and lumbering I rarely exceed the limit in it) but somehow they left me alone. I'm 100% certain they could have had me if they wanted to, so hats off to them for using their discretion and leaving me alone in the circumstances. But yes, more than half a mile away is the limit, but if you were tailgating with other traffic they may not have been able to see your plates.
