I used to get told to stop wasting money buying flowers. So one Valentines Day, I bought a set of stacking crates and left them by the front door. When she got home, I told that I had listened and instead of flowers/chocolates I got the crates. She was obviously disappointed, but not a lot she could do
Of course I had also bought flowers & chocolate as well. Never been told again not to but flowers and/or chocolates!
