That some people think that "taggers=cowards" astounds me. I'm rarely rude to people on here, mainly because I'm generally a polite person. However, the idea that some people think they are the STW hard men makes me wonder.

Ton's a big guy, and seems like a decent bloke. in real life he'd give most of us a slap, on the Internet he's equal to everybody else. What makes some people on here think being a gobshite makes them brave?

Genuinely interested in this by the way!

I find the use of tags as insults somewhat strange. I am normally able to deal with whatever in the thread - I see no need for anonymous insults.

The tags themselves are great fun, I just think that most pepople who use them do so as a laugh.

If you think this place is bad you should go on AOL and read the comments following any story about Katie Price. There are some truly vile people out there with far too much time on their hands.

OP, is there a thread to which you're referring?

I hardly ever post tags, and if I do they're often directed at me. I always thought the tags were to help the search engines find specific posts, to this end I believe the OP is the only person who should have the power to add/delete tags and the other posters have the option to offer ideas.
Some of the tagging is simply immature.
If, in real life, ton would give most of us a slap, I would have to ask myself why? Why would he have to resort to violence to get a point across.
Surely you only get bullied on here if you allow it.

the tags are often the wittiest thing on the threads - a challenge to be a wise ass in 3 words.

what some people (we all know who) fail to realise is that the more that they get sand in their fannies about it, the more people will keep on posting them.

indeed - at least make them funny and entertaining if you need to make insults anonymously.

Dull is just dull and sad.

How predictable that people would start with the dull tags about me.

tm, orange you supposed to be studying?

tags - I'm a bit Meh about them.

Sometimes, they are quite funny, but having been on the end of one or two hurtful ones, I think they can be a bit abusive sometimes.

When they're describing the general zeitgeist of a thread, they can sometimes be hilarious. Most often they're not though, and they're not policed enough by the Mods (though I can understand why this would please some posters muchly).

Sorry, firstly to Ton, who's not even posted, and secondly, for making this about violence.

I'm looking at some of the machoism on here at its most basic. I'm possibly misreading or misunderstanding what the "taggers=cowards" for me it's the attitudes that some on here have, which are no more intelligent than giving someone a slap.

TJ the one that says "TJ goes in orbit" makes me giggle everytime. Sorry, I know you get really cross at them, but that one just makes me laugh...

I'd like to call people names directly but due to it being the Internet can't really be arsed, I think TJ once said most folk wouldn't actually be such an arse to your face and tend to agree that the Internet as a rule is a good medium for creating conflict without getting a slap.

My questioning of the purpose of tags last night was to ascertain their purpose ,wether they were used as a search function or something, however one thing that did become obvious was that you could insult someone by inference as such and as such I thought the mods frowned upon such behaviour.

I love them there tags. Those that were posted on, that thread where TJ got I right hammering (which I didn't like or approve) were some of the finest adlibs I've seen inventive, harsh (in some cases) witty, circuited,directed... I mean "flounceaggedon", c'mon, I still lol at that now.

Shame TJ got the blunt end, but he's thick skinned.

Yeah you've misread it. I put Taggers=Cowards on a thread recently because I get pissed off with the unrelenting anti-TJ tags. I know it doesn't bother him but I find them pathetic and often quite nasty, it suggests that the author lacks the intellectual ability to challenge TJ in a fair and open way, in other words, they are intellectual cowards. It has nothing to do with threatening violence, ffs. You shouldn't take the internet/bike forums so seriously. There's more important things to get wound up in life..... I would have thought.

Gobshiteing on a forum doesnt make you hard though

That's my favourite tag I've seen in a while, off of the engineer thread. As long as the tagger is 'aware' though...

Emsz, it's not an official Yeti branded Awesome!!! without the exclamation marks.

I'd just like to know who the tagger is, I suspect it's just another of the regular posters.

Now I've read the thread, theirs an obvious divide between those who've had tags aimed at them, and those that haven't.

I used to be bothered, I used to want to understand the motivation for being singled out anonymously, now I'd just like to know who it is so that if we ever meet in real life we can 'talk' about it.

Are you saying Ton can't talk?

I'm sure it'd be affectionate if it was from you. I'm a little depressed I've not been tagged for a while. Nothing avout cupcakes, nothing about tickle-me-elmo. No yeti show, nothing boresome, the southern wetty, ummm... there must be more.

I like it best when someone posts a witty one then a copycat post one that just doesn't scan as well... I think those ones are great.

Look, I've never left any "anti-TJ" tags (life is too short), but to imply that anyone can gain anything from havign a "fair and open" debate with the guy is a bit naive isn't it?

Well you started a thread about it which suggests that you do care.

I find the anti-TJ tags mostly tedious, boring, and childish. Although I do like the tag function because of its comic value - it has no other purpose. But I personally never put other users names in my tags.

And just to add, whilst I have never reported any posts, I have on one occasion complained to the mods. That was concerning the relentless attacks on TJ, the thread in question was deleted - it had got well out hand.

LOL ! I've just checked, and I didn't put the Tagger=Coward because of attacks on TJ .....it was in reference to one about Stoner !

I've just remembered, the tag said Stoner=Muppet, so I put Tagger=Coward, because no one had actually challenged him on that thread. The tag has since been removed.

I must be getting daft 😀

"keyboard warriors" make me laugh, this forum ain't too bad but there is a culture of "ive been posting since the start. so people need to respect me more and what I say goes". when intact everyone is equal on here. other forums I go on are far worse, some of the car ones are tragic!

the mods on here are a bit facist mind, my ONE SWEAR WORD reply to one post was deleted and i actually got an email telling me off, it wasn't even a bad swear word.

I think paulo has hit the nail on the head. Now Paulo is a big fella and can probably handle himself on the pavement too. So instead of th willy- waving may or may not be hardmen talking up what they might do to someone who crosses them (or their pets), there should be a line by which folks can be declared forum hard men or not. Paulo should be that line. Anyone who wants to spout stuff about what they would do, needs to travel to the north east and either a) fight and beat him b) wave willies with him and be shown to be bigger, or c) smash his back doors in.

Waddya say Paulo? Are you ready to be the line?

If it helps, I'll come and watch and hold your coat or something.

More than cowardly posts/tags, what i find sad is that some people simply don't have the courage in 'Real Life' to say to someone's face what they've said on here. I've had at least one or two folk meet me in 'Real Life' and either not even reveal who their forum character is, or say anything like the comments they've felt comfortable making from behind the safety of their keyboards. Now that really is cowardly.

On such occasions, I would willingly have told those individuals exactly what I thought about their views, without any worries. 'Don't say owt you woon't say to their face' is the forum rule, and one I stick to, as it's my own philosophy anyway.

I almost agree with you there Elf. I think folks should not saynthings on here that they would not say in 'real life'. However on here we have anonimity which cannot be ignored. So i woild never say anything to someone on here which i would not say in their presence. But some of those things i only say when they cannot see me. So when you hear a voice calling you names or disagreeing with you, but you cannot identify it. It's not in your head, it's probably me.

No that's true GW; most people who spout crap on tinternet woon't have the bottle to do so in Real Life™, so such occasions rarely arise.

I have had a couple of amusing encounters where I've seen the colour drain from some internet warior's face when they realise who I am. 😆 And it's funny to think of just how grovelling and 'nice' they were to me, and how they reverted to 'internet tough guy' once safely back behind their keyboard...

Yeah, you'd just hide behind Rob anyway you pansy...

GW; I have no probs discussing owt with folk in real life. I do find most folk are a bit more reserved than they might be online, however. But I spose that's their nature. Not everyone has sufficient confidence to behave as they like in Real Life™.

I respect honesty and sincerity in people more than them just saying the socially accepted 'polite' thing.

However on here we have anonimity which cannot be ignored

Speak for yerself; I've met well over wunundred people off here. cos it's like, a social networking thing, right? All about getting together with like-minded folk for rides, beers and that, in't it?

I've had a few tags aimed at me- I can make a fair bet who did most of them- and tbh I just found it laughable. But is it a coincidence that some of the most unpleasant comments are also anonymous? I'd say of course not.

If the forum software will handle it, I reckon it'd be a very good idea for taggers to be identified... I know it does it behind-the-scenes, if it was public it'd stop people from cowering.

Not really, no. I'm still 'me'.

It wasn't particularly aimed at you, just a general comment.

But as an example, you still have "anonymity" when you post ?

I know that you used to know my brother and his wife 15 years ago, but as you post under an assumed name rather than your real one, I have no idea who you are still (and neither do they)

(like I said, it wasn't aimed at you in particular, just at the whole idea of "Internet names")

😆

What, like 'Oh my God I never realised it would be so nasty and 'orrible!'

Seriously though; most of it on here is pretty good-natured stuff, and even some of the heated debates are between folk who do have some sort of respect for each other, but there can be a nasty snidey element that creeps in, and it says more about that person's inadequacy than the target of their oh-so-amusing tag.

But as an example, you still have "anonymity" when you post ?

Yeah fair point actually I spose. I'm wary of giving out my real name on internet fora cos I have a deep mistrust of all this electronic information stuff. I don't have an email addy cos years ago I got some properly nasty emails sent me via this forum, and prefer not to have to put up with that crap, but I've no problem meeting up with new folk for rides and beers, in fact in the last couple of weeks I've met 3 new faces off here and had a right laugh with all of them.

There are certain aspects of life I like to keep separate though, too much stuff about folk on tinternet for the whole World to see...

Maybe we should be able to post on folk's profiles as to what we think of them?

Behave, Al....

Perhaps an element of it... But still, you can go to rides and meet lots of these "anonymous" people. Or, with a little tech savvy and more time than you know what to do with you can track people down on teh internetz. And if nothing else, your screen name has some continuity. But the tags don't even have that.

Tell them it's Az, little brown feller with a bike, used to come round the halls to see Matt-U. Would quite often get rather horribly drunk and swear at folk then vomit copiously everywhere.

And do this, right: shout 'MAAAAAAAARRRRRT'NN!' In a Norn Irish accent sort of thing. 😀

I have some Buddhist friends who have always given me handy tips on how to deal with certain life aspects - I have to use the one on personal insults here quite a bit - and that is (along the lines of what Effin's banging on about) that when someone insults you, looks down his or her nose at you, is pretentious, etc etc, more often than not it's about making him or herself feel better, not really about making you feel bad.

I don't think it's always some deep-seated feelings of inadeqaucy, an inferiority complex, or self-esteem issues.

i find tagging a bit off to be honest.

I have no probs discussing owt with folk in real life

do you use childlike affectations (is not, dijical, was not, owt, woont etc) in your face to face oratorical interactions?

I find the use of childish unimaginative tagging the ideal compliment to the childish unimaginative level of debate from the usual suspects who seek to try and stiffle any real debate by endlessly goggling 'facts' in order to further their own ego w@nking. If a thread goes on for more than 2 pages you can pretty predict it has become pointless.
