I've started doing some deadlifts and am getting a bit into it. However I have short arms and my weight plates are small in diameter.
I'm a 40 year old woman so I don't really need an Olympic bar set up (I also can't afford one). However I need a cheap, easy way to lift the weights off the floor, about 5 inches. Ideally this will be made of a weight deadening material as I'm on the second floor.
I'm sure there is a cheap "thing" that will do this but I can't think of anything.
Any ideas?

Make sure that you get your form correct and squat down as far as it is comfortable. Loads of videos on YouTube. You could try some thick rubber mats, various places sell them on the net.

Use your imagination. Double them up or substitute with catalogues or what ever.

Sounds like a perfect use for some Argos catalogues
+1 just remember to wrap some tape around them to stop them sliding off each other.
You could also get some old car tyres and screw some plywood to the top of them. If the weights you are using are too heavy then flip the tyre,put a bin liner inside and fill with sand. Screw another piece of plywood onto the open side and it will offer more than enough support. Add lats front and rear to stop the weights rolling off.
