So a question.
I have a BMW R100GS I can no longer ride. It's got grotty sitting in the shed, but it's got less than 30k on the clock.
I plan to sell it.
What's the best tactic
As is, fix it up, or break it for parts?
Stealth ad on a bike forum? "Barn find"?
How much?
Depends how grotty and how old it is/what bits it has on it. If it at least runs then you've more chance of selling it on.
And could you really be arsed breaking it up and mailing all the parts (given your location there won't be a huge local market).
If you just want it out of the way in exchange for some money, you could try the online buyers. Condition seems irrelevant but expect to be offered 25% less than book price. If you get an extra £100 out of them you're a Premier league haggler. wewantyourmotorbike turned up in a van, bank transferred on the spot and took my old bike away.
Otherwise have heard some good reports about AutoTrader
Fix it up best you can and sell it - these are now 'classics' and it should be worth a bob or two. 30,000 is barely run in for a boxer.
They are also currently fashionable with the cafe racer/bobber crowd, if you're ok with seeing it butchered.
This thread is useless without pictures.
What year?
There is one on ebay at the moment with 24k on the clock for £4750.
OP
Go on,you know you want to 🙂

R100gs are very sought after, I had the black and yellow version, wish I’d never sold it. I can’t see breaking it as being a good idea. I’d say light fix it up to get it running and mot and maybe try a stealth add on HUBB forum
I sold a 1990 bumble bee one about 18 months ago. Grotty cosmetically, but sound runner with MOT, recon gearbox and recent driveshaft for £2800. Sold in days. Probably could have got more. I'd sell as is. Parts to fix up are expensive. Prices are on the rise. Probably get around £3750. Try out on Ukgser forum.
As has been said very desirable, try the GS owners website. Should fly away.
Even the old Plod bikes with 40bn miles on go for £3k...
Worth upping your expectations I reckon..
theres a 1988 one with more miles going for over 4k on fleabay, i'd give it a clean, it'll sell even on SORN
Holy excrement! I've now looked at prices on eBay etc. Expectations raised. 🙂
It wasn't really a stealth ad - I'm culling my bicycles, and the BMW is in the way, but I wouldn't try to sell it until closer to the good weather.
I can't ride it because it's too high, my hip goes funny swinging a leg over it.
I had thought of chopping it down lower to make it rideable for me, but it's all original so I didn't want to muck it around, then I thought ach, it's just an old bike, it won't care, and getting rid of it could fund a bike I could ride.

That is very close to my ideal, only lower. I've got enough bits to build another BMW and something like that would be the result - only lower and uglier 🙂
I was going to build the BMW I wanted 40 years ago, the R85/8, I even got R85/8 engine logo plates made up and have a new suitably short stroke crank and rods for the engine build. I think the 1,000 motor isn't smooth enough and was going to keep the bore but shorten the cranks etc and have a 850cc which I reckon would be the sweet spot for that motor. The bastard offspring of a R45/60 and a R100.
Then I rode 10,000 miles on a R850C and realised that was a better idea. However I still have all the parts needed.
