As a part time football fan, full time Scot, I cheered the England goal going in, and Spence's last ditch tackle.
England always seem to win me over as tournaments go on, plus it's hard not to support whoever is up against Argentina, as good as they looked by the end once they had (mostly) abandoned the shithousery.

Tuchel decided to defend a 1 goal lead with 35 min to play - you can’t invite a team like Argentina onto you for half a game - 100% Tuchels mistake.
Also whilst Pickford made some fine saves, his distribution was awful - constantly kicking long and giving the ball back to Argentina.

Not just me then. A very part-time football fan, I also cheered England's goal and that tackle from Spence was absolutely superb. The anyone but England attitude up here is just sad. The pundits after the match seemed intent on talking about everything that's wrong. I didn't hear a single thing celebrating the team reaching the final 4 of a world competition. Is that not good enough? Maybe they did eventually say that but I switched it off as those attitudes are just annoying.

There was a South American commentator on Five Live this morning who basically shrugged and said that that's just the way football is played in South America. Everyone does it and the other South American squads in the World Cup all did it too. It is bloody awful (and sometimes infuriating) to watch though.
I think we're just used to watching the Premier League and Champions League where its all about skill and pace, which is a different style of football altogether. You just need to watch a Championship game to see how much more 'industrial' it is than the top tier.
Or go down to Hackney Marshes (other sites are also available) on a Sunday morning to see some real industrial football. Or watch Keane V Vieira.

Once England sat back, I don't know if it was fatigue or lack of belief but Messi realised the best way he could impact the game was to sit back in the space and put good quality balls into the box which created a lot of chances. When England tried to do the same in the last few minutes they couldn't even get the ball past the first defender.
You just need to watch a Championship game to see how much more 'industrial' it is than the top tier.

England just looked really naive. The first half shithousery was just to stop Bellingham, Rice and Elliott getting into any kind of groove. They knew some of the England team would give a bit back, which would probably stop the referee being too card-happy.
Stop the midfield and you stop England, exactly what Spain did to France the previous evening - only difference being Argentina used low-level fouls whereas Spain used geometry and technique.
England's goal probably came at the worst possible time - caught between keeping things as-is, settling into a slightly different pattern and trying to batten down the hatches for survival. Messi had been well-managed til that point but as soon as England's midfield starting backing off from him and letting him look up when he had the ball there was only ever going to be one outcome.

And yet in other games he made some really good tactical substitutions. He definitely got this one wrong, but blimey, one mistake and we want people to lose their jobs?? Overall I've liked the energy and (mostly) positive play he's brought, and we were in the game for most of it, but it did go badly wrong at the end!

Just a quick note regarding the Falklands - ownership of those islands is in Argentina a little like immigration in this country - it's a great distraction & thing to blame rather than looking at the real issues.

England finished where they deserved, 3rd or 4th best team at the tournament that needs to rely on luck a bit too much to actually win it as the overall squad is quite up there. You can’t sub off Kane Bellingham rice or Anderson as the drop off is far too much. I’d be interested to know when the manager found out Saka was only able to play for about an hour over the whole tournament or was it a massive risk filling a spot with him

Technically England have made great strides in the past twenty odd years, but they’re still inferior at keeping hold of the ball than most. The Spanish would have killed that game off last night by keeping the ball, with opportunities to add to the lead, had they gone one up. I really hope they win it! Yamal hopefully will have a better game in the final.

Even as a very much occasional fan, the decision to change what was basically working, to an obviously mental tactic of inviting an attacking side happy to take shots from outside the box, into the England half, was utterly mystifying. Argentina had nothing to lose at that point.

Scotland picked a black player for the first time in 1881, England did it in 1978, almost 100 years later.
