The word 'B*tc...

[Closed] The word 'B*tch' get's past the swear filter. Why?

I'm wondering if we're all missing the point - I've re-read the OP carefully and surely the suggestion is simply that more words should be allowed through the swear filter?

Really, I'm with Mrs Fry.

I want more women mtbing, mostly because I'm a pervert. But that's besides the point, if we use language that keeps them out - then you ****ers aren't going to get anywhere with the opposite sex. 😀

would've thought that a moderator would be interested if a gender-specific term is being used to insult women on these pages. Instead, you seem to be very defensive.

Defensive of what?

A word that can be used as insult doesn't need to be blocked because it once was. We'd be blocking a lot of words otherwise.

It's perfectly true that some men may not know the identity of their parents, but I'm pretty sure that no woman is a female dog.

You might want to look more closely at those results then.

From the first page of my Google search for "Bitch" the contexts are as follows:

FS: NS Bitch Frame (Original version)
Glentress "The Bitch"
fs ns bitch frame + bits
OT- Anyone out there wanting a beatiful working Cocker bitch ...
FS: Spank Bitch Stick riser and 50mm stem
Danni Mynogue =X Factor Bitch..
Pit Bitch
FS Dr Jekyll XL and Ns Bikes Bitch
FS - NS Bitch dirt / jump / street : 9 speed awesome build ...
Help!! - choosing a dog - Boy or Girl? - cocker spaniel

So arguably one of those is actually using it as an insult (Pit Bitch) and that was just someone's user name.

(The Dani Minogue one is someone "bitching" about her, not calling her a bitch I think - but we could count that one too if it helps).

For Bastard the contexts are:

ever felt like a proper bastard?
Double Bastard
Bastard tyres
I should be dead - bastard motorist nearly killed me!
Bastard ITBS....
Bastard Sellers Tricks!
way, way , weigh OT: just weighed our cats (fat bastard content ...
SOME CHAV BASTARD IS ROLLIN OUT ON MY YETI 5!!!!
SOME CHAV BASTARD IS ROLLIN OUT ON MY YETI 5 ...
Identification chart for Oz spiders

So yeah most of them are insults, not identifying fatherless men.

I already have, thanks. I think I'm capable, because I'm an adult, of working out when "bitch" is being used as a sexist insult, and when it isn't.

For Bastard the contexts are:

More whataboutery. If it bothers you, start a thread.

Yup I know but I'm still unsure what your point is. Apart from claiming its used regular on here to insult. Which can be reported.

Looks like a non-problem to me!

Was that the subtlest Jay-Z reference ever? If so 😆

My niece called me her bitch once after she beat me to the top of a climb. I slipped a pedal, honest i did!

The word itself isn't offensive, like a lot of British swearing it can often be used affectionately so banning the word would be overkill but reporting posts where it's used offensively would seem reasonable.

Good then a quick scan through the results will confirm that using it as a sexist insult is not "a regular occurrence on this forum" - in fact it's actually pretty rare, especially when compared to the frequency that male-specific insults are used.

More whataboutery.

It's not whataboutery - it's context and perspective.

FFS stop bitching and calm the **** down.

If you spent less time bitching you might not sound so angry and enjoy life a little more.

That's a Top Tip.

If this was a Hollywood movie, GrahamS and Ransos would fall into each other's arms and kiss right about now.

My perception of STW is that, at times, there is a nasty undercurrent of misogyny running through the place. The use of a gender-specific term to insult women is just one manifestation of that. We could all reflect on whether our language creates a negative impression and puts women off, or we could choose to dismiss it without consideration.

And again, let's not forget that there are children starving in Africa.

Personally, I think MrsFry was trolling you. Seeing as she openly propositioned (read sexually harassed) ASTR as he was laying in his hospital bed.

our language creates a negative impression and puts women off

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site%3Amumsnet.com+bitch = 18,300 hits

I'm not convinced it's the language that puts women off 😀

And again, let's not forget that there are children starving in Africa.

You say something is "a regular occurrence".
I demonstrate that it isn't.
You say that's "whataboutery".

😕

S****horpe is more of a concern.

In IT circles it's widely known as "the S****horpe Problem."

I got bitten by this not all that long ago when I changed job titles and suddenly found a vast amount of my emails were being flagged as spam. The problem was "specialist" containing "cialis" which is some oft-spammed drug or other (Viagra-a-like I think).

though (the Father Ted version) - can't understand why that's banned

This predates me but I believe it was simply due to overuse.

Would like to know STWs answer as to why it get's a free pass to be continued to be used.

Context I expect. It's not in and of itself a swear word so generally wouldn't be in the swear filter. However it can be used as an insult, and abusing other users is against the T&Cs. I'd urge you to use the Report Post link for anything you find offensive and someone will review it. "Bitch" has a number of perfectly legitimate uses also, so it's not something that an automated system could easily filter out.

If you like, the answer to "why isn't there a speed camera here" is "because we've got a policeman with a notepad instead."

I just note that "bastard", which is pretty much the male gender equivalent of "bitch", is used more than three times as often here.

Given the ratio of male to female forum members, that statistic doesn't do your argument any favours...!

There might well be a nasty undercurrent of misogyny running through the place, but the use of a gender-specific term to insult women isn't a manifestation of that as it's a term widely used by women.

Unless you're suggesting that it's only used by misogynistic women.

I would've thought, in 2016, that it wasn't necessary to explain why a man using "bitch" to refer to a woman is not quite the same thing as women using it to refer to each other. See also: black people referring to each other as "****".

Edited to add: I'm pretty surprised that made it through the swear filter!

Exactly. Anyone with basic knowledge of expletive generous narratives knows that only 2 really count. The rest are just wussy words.
