Had a long debate with someone over this.
Would you say aiming power tools as gifts for men is sexist?
If this was reversed, where (stereotypical) the advert said 'Perfect for Mum' next to an iron or vacuum cleaner, would that be okay?

I would love to comment, but I have a neck injury ๐
So do I now.

No - not in the slightest.
Men love power tools - you can't compare a hoover to an SDS hammer drill or laser guided saw!
I see there's a power washer in there though - now that is like being given a hoover.
I'd file this under 'mehh who cares'
it being fathers day soon may have something to do with it.
Yeah, I'd happily get a power tool as a present* (and often do). I would die a painful death if I bought my wife a vacuum cleaner as a present.
*Although it would be nice to be afforded the time to actually use it when I want rather than constantly being told 'we need to do this' or 'we've got to go there'.
:-/

And presumably you both concluded that sexism has been the preserve of men for so very long that diminishing it as an issue by getting all whiney and entitled might in itself also be sexism?
That's that settled then ๐ . I shall feedback.
Don't worry - Mark will no doubt Tweet it before too long.

Oh god an SJW.
Quick, someone nuke it from orbit.
Would you say aiming power tools as gifts for men is sexist?
No, not at all. Stereotyping if you want to call it anything. But who gives a ****, apart from people waiting to be offended.

We all know birds don't buy that many drills eh !

Pretty much everyone on here then.
Nope.
I doesn't discriminate against either sex. I very much doubt that B&Q ran a similar ad in March for Mothers Day, but if you're suggesting that that's sexist - I'd like to see the data to suggest an equal amount of Women as Men would consider a Power Tool a nice gift to themselves.
The idea that we would assume that everyone, everywhere is exactly the same is a more 90s outdated "must be PC" idea - Women and Men are different, whilst if you consider the whole global population than of course there is a HUGE overlap, but to think to be a 'nice person' you should treat everyone as some kind of gender-less, ageless, shapeless, culture-less blob you're wrong - we should never discriminate against anyone because of who they are - but we shouldn't pretend differences don't exist.
Dam racists
Maybe I should film the reaction when they see the thread.. ๐
You guys want sexist?
Mothercare is sexist. It should be called parentcare. Who should I complain to?
I bought the wife a dyson handheld for her birthday once (after hearing her tell someone she really wanted one)
She said thank you ( it wasn't her only present btw)
Nothing here to see
@ Tom_W1987 ๐ฏ I'm hungry now!
Hungry like a wolf? ๐
But seriously, those adverts are actual sexist....guys don't have it half as bad.
djglover - MemberSeriously, if you think that is sexist you dont wanna see how tools are marketed in trade
Spotted at a suppliers offices, this is a big german corporate btw, not a back street garage:
Oh God, don't tell me Maxxis have moved into the power tool business?!

just have a look at the Diet Coke ads for a direct comparison though, half naked oiled lad selling a drink, or how about the levi's ad with your man whipping everything off to sell some clothes...

not that i really give a monkey's either way, or maybe i do ๐ ... can someone tell me what to think please?
We got a new vaccuum cleaner just before Christmas and like the wag that I am I put a picture of it on facebook saying "The wife's christmas present has arrived..."
The shit I got from mutual (female) friends...

Maybe not, but there are always the Diet Coke ads for the fat chicks. ๐

You monster!
Selling power tools to men is not sexist.
Making your employee's life hell for getting pregnant is sexist.
Calling a dad looking after his kids "babysitting" is sexist.
Having a woman in a bikini hold up an umbrella for the male racing drivers is sexist.
The way that family courts treat fathers is often very sexist.
Drills are not sexist. Phallic, but not sexist.
Meh
It's just a drill. It's kind of boring.

I think it's demeaning to transexuals... should be banned

sexist?? Under Mother's Day gifts:
What's wrong with being sexy?
I'd be well unhappy if I got a drill for fathers day...
What's wrong with a massive Toblerone?
My first Valentines gift from my BF was a circular saw.
There are reasons I love that man.

The holes would be triangular?
Calling a dad looking after his kids "babysitting" is sexist.
I call it that when my other half goes out and I stay in with the little man.
Who am I supposed be offending, me or her (or him?)
Calling a dad looking after his kids "babysitting" is sexist.
How d'you work that one out, then?
Pray tell, enquiring minds want to know.
I call it that when my other half goes out and I stay in with the little man.
More like zoo keeping in our house and they're too old for the term babysitting now (imo) but I'm with you it's only offensive if you take it that way. More about someone being over sensitive than any actual insult.
