My cousin lives in Montana and her son is a trainee fire-fighter.

Surprisingly little about Texas on her Facebook feed at the moment....

I can imagine. Was on the phone with colleagues in Montana yesterday, and even though they aren't close to the biggest fires, the air is still heavy.

The few I clicked on in the map were all over 1000 acres, one was 94k acres!

1000 acres = about 4 square km, so 94k acres is about all of tube zones 1-4 in London...

That seems like a lot of ground to be on fire - is it just the at risk area or the bit that's been burned or something else?

Got a friend in West Linn, OR. Her facebook feed looks like the end of days. The Columbia river is now closed to shipping due to falling ash and having to allow the firefighting aircraft to land & take-on water continuously. The damage through the Eagle Creek area looks like it’ll take decades to recover from.

so who are they saying started it - that facebook thread implies that someones to blame.

I was going to suggest that sacrificing Trump to the fire gods might work...

Was in Calif recently and had to change hotels because of fires around Wawona (S of Yosemite).. Smoke haze was really bad on some days and was clearly visible from Sentinel Dome.

Drove through miles and miles of fire damage between there and Monterey too.

Still nature doing its best. The needles of the indigenous pines are designed to spread fire quickly and away from their tree. And they work!!!

Firefighter arson? Someone looking for extra cash maybe?

I have friends in Gresham, they're getting nervous. They think that fire was started by kids messing about with fireworks.

Get these every year in Spain, not good at all. And a shockingly large number are arson - often property developers, but they caught one 56 year old lady last year causing fires in Galicia, seems she held some kind of grudge 😯

Western Canada is no better... lots of the back country closed and serious fire / smoke almost everywhere.

I don't think we've had any rain for over 3 months...

It does, although I just Googled and Montana alone has over 25 million acres of forest, so maybe it's just one of those times where nature needs to just do it's thing? Hopefully keeping casualties to a minimum of course!

Amazing stat I've just discovered: the state of Maine is still 89% covered by forest. Definitely makes me think the UK is overcrowded these days! 🙂

Last call of the day was with colleagues in Florida. They're getting ready to evacuate. Emails with a friend out in Antigua earlier, seems Irma skirted around them, and is now heading straight to Florida. And another storm is already building behind her.

Both sides of the U.S.

Yeah there's lots of nature over in North America isn't there?!
When we were in bc Canada in July all the local news about the wildfires. We had to take a long detour south to get from kamloops to whistler, and drove past a burning hillside.
Got friends who used to live in British Virgin Islands and still have a house there who are watching hurricane Irma do her thing via their old neighbours'Facebook feeds.
And in the middle of it somewhere a mate gregwaring of this parish is riding the great divide. He's currently in Colorado according to strava so away from the danger areas. A tent wouldn't be much use in Montana right now....

About 1974 when I was living in outback Queensland we had a bushfire with a 400 mile front.

I had to fly up to the Mornington Island and there was fire below us the whole way to the coast from Mt Isa. Luckily there's not many communities down there, but it's hell for the cattle and wildlife. No escape.

That was a result of the previous years cyclones and heavy rains leaving a magnificent growth of grass and vegetation.

Nature gives with one hand and takes away with the other.

No arson involved. Just get a bit of wind and eucalypt branches rubbing together.
