Falling into water from a wakeboard or even from a sailboard powered by the Tramontane doesn't do anything like the damage landing on ice does Flash. You just don't like pain, admit it. 😉

30ish mph toe edge catch landing across the wake hurts....!

Was unconscious in the water for a while...!

Catching a boom in the head in a big wind jibe hurts....!

Was unconscious in the water for a while...!

Wimp.

Anyhow, I skied all last season without a fall on alpine skis and only a few silly topples on XC skis. I gave up the board on abything other than powder when it was clear I couldn't get through a weekend without doing something that would hurt for a month.

Edit: landing on the boom in a catapult windsurfing fall did hurt for a while I'll admit, but not as long or as much as landing on my coccyx on ice. That was in the days before padded trousers so I cut up a Karrimat to fit my ski pants.

To me it's like comparing road biking and mountain biking.......
They're both ace!

Yes, both ace, but I'll always choose the same one over the other!

Ditto on the wakeboarding - a supplier took me out on his 10.5m rib with a pair of 250s on the back a couple of weeks ago from Lymington, it pulled me out of the water quite nicely!

Pair of 250s? Pah! 😉

I usually go behind a Super Air 230 with a phattttt tower. Much nicer wake than a rib, IMHO.

But, engines are soooooo over. Paddles is where it's at!

Now, back on track - What's the trend of the year?

I reckon that the Sally BBRs are having an impact on "shaping" of skis, a la surfboards. Viz this from Dynastar;

Excellent bindings, shame about the planks (unless you have a helicopter and live somewhere on the American continent where you can find suitable snow).

"Awesome Controversial skis / bindings !!
FTFY!
Did you try before you buy(bought)? Bit of a love/hate ski is the BBR.
I loved them for an all rounder piste basher, but hated all the attention I got when trying them out! Every single blighter had to ask me all about them!"

Had long enough to get a few big arcs at high speed
Some transition to mank / crud and a few short swings / mess about

It's gonna be a quiver of one so actually works quite well
In this respect, it's easy to say bbr's don't won't do X Y Z when you have 3-4 pairs of skis

regards questions , as a telemarker I get asked stupid
questions all the time, but then it's half a binding half a brain etc eyc

Middle aged dad - lol that's me spot on !!

Isn't powder about skiing in the snow rather than on it? It's all about getting into a rythme (godille) and enjoying that plouf-plouf-plouf... . If the skis are so fat the snow never reaches your ankles you may as well ski on groomed pistes.

Edit to add:

Unsure a Super Air 230 would have handled 60 knots across to the IOW though - 127 litres per hour fuel consumption at that rate!! Spent most weekends in my youth behind a Master Craft or Ski Nautique up on Windermere where single figure water temperatures gave you a good incentive not to come off! That Eton Dorney clip is just insane!

Bet yes, back on track......

OK, I get the child seat age limit for the bikes, but when can I take the little blighter skiing as well?

Yep, there's a Mini-Flash on the way!

I'd alluded to it elsewhere on STW, but this thread seemed a good place to make it more obvious! After all, this was, though I say so myself, one of the best threads last year, full of so many good people, and so little arguing - A real paragon of what STW can be.

So, yes, there it is.

I'm not going skiing this year. 🙁

But.... 😀 !

Congratulations, Flash! You'll find ideas for what to do with kids elsewhere on that YouTube account of mine. Have fun. They can make progress on skis from 22 months which is about the age they become interesting in many respects.

LOL! Congrats CFH - my third is almost 5 months old and I have just about managed to keep the winter trips to boys only since the first came along 6 years ago - reckon I've got another 3 or 4 years of that before the family start coming along and the enjoyment changes dimension somewhat!

If I had the time I'd post pics of junior in a pouch at an X-C ski race at 3 months and of me skiing with him in a rucksac at 11 months. Once he could keep his skis parallel I towed him around with a rope.

Yay! Congratulations Flashy.

Your first I take it?
Prepare for major life change (but mostly in a good way!)

I'm not going skiing this year.

Bummer - but you'll soon be back at it. I took the missus to Fernie while she was 6 months pregnant. And took our baby with us to Austria the following year. And again the year after that.

This year I'm hoping to get her playing around on some plastic skis. 😀

Congratulations all on the baby front. This year was mine and my 2 daughters first time Skiing and we loved it (Mrs Ache has been doing it for over 20 years). We put the girls (2 and 4 at the time) into Piou Piou and they thought it was great they cant wait to go again next year. My youngest woke up crying in the middle of the night the other week, when I went into her to see what was wrong she said 'I just want to go skiing.'

We are planning on getting them up the top of Pleney this time and taking them both down Piste B. As long as nobody breaks a leg like I managed on the first day this year then it will be great.

Val Cenis for us Feb haft term. Appartment, tunnel and overnight stops booked last week. Just need to sort out ski hire, lift passes and kids ski school. Saving a fortune so far booking it all direct.

MrsMc has a smart new pair of Atomic boots to replace her 1990s cerise Salomons. No new toys for me, new board last year.

Very tempted by a New Year trip too.

Hi Jane
Has Jules finished sanding yet?
Av's boots are white and black as far as I remember with those weird rubbery expandable bits at the side. Just realised they will almost match my snowboard boots. His n hers 😯

I cycled past a house yesterday that had its front door and garage door painted the same blue as the car!

😆 @ Wallop!

Seriously though, fit is vital on a ski helmet, as with a bike helmet. Especially important to try it on with your goggles to make sure they work! (Smith Holt and Oakley Crowbar for me. As it happens, my helmet is a nice matte grey...! 🙂 )

Indeed!

I don't think I could ski without one now, would just feel wrong. Even at the Hemel Alp, even cruising down Briance or Frejus in the sunshine. I suppose in many cases it's "les autres" that are the potential problem, rather than my own skiing, but it just feels right to ski with a helmet now.

They're getting really good now, as well. I'd love to see a MTB helmet with the close/open vent option as seen on most ski lids now. Would be really good for v cold/awful weather rides, I reckon. Ski lids have learnt from bike lids, time for it to go the other way, I think!

Wallop - I have a Salomon Poison with peak. Peak is great for sunny days, however it drives me mad when I can't balance my goggles over the lid.
Also worn a lid for 10 years now, don't care how it looks, as said above it feels right and very warm on cold days.

Have also covered it in mtb stickers 🙂

Paul - any shed is a good shed.

I bought a Giro G10 (over a G9) because of the peak. Soon took it off and never put it back on...

Congrats on the babies you lot above. I managed to slide in a shortish trip to Colorado 3 months after my little one was born - mother's special bonding time I called it 😉

My Smith Hustle has a small peak on it.

Can't see the benefit of a peak on a ski helmet.

Meets up with the top of the (Smith) goggles so there is no Gaper Gap.

Gaper Gap.

No gap on mine, because the two fit together perfectly. But yes, a Gaper Gap is A Bad Thing.

I'd have liked a Hustle or similar, to be honest. The lovely people at Smith gave me a Holt, though, and it fits perfectly with the goggles that the lovely people at Oakley gave me, so that's all good in my eyes! 8)

Yeah the Hustle is very similar to the Holt, but it has closable vents (which the Holt didn't have back then, but might well do now).

Sits very neatly with Smith goggles, even the vent holes line up.

FWIW, my Crowbars have never fogged up with my Holt. Smith seem very good at the venting on their helmets. Works very well for me.

congrats CFH!

no peak for me. know a few who do, but they're they type who (very justifyably) wear full face too. reckon the small ones on the smith helmets look good though.

any other brands doing similar to the BBRs other than dynastar?

still not sure how/when i'll make it out this winter - trans nepal mtb race looks like it might get in the way. fortunately i'd not have to pay for accomm or transfers, so we'll see what happens.

in other news, am currently chatting to eddie the eagle about a return to skiing... and we just launched a beta of our new ski site **cough**

Did a double take when I saw the title but as the others have said why not indeed.

2013 is a big birthday year and planning a skip trip around it with another mate with a similar milestone. Early stage planning but early March in Val d'Isere, Verbier or Zermatt. Wish to mark the occasion with some ski touring which I've not done before.

Hopefully another trip or three, New Year and have a Swiss mate trying to talk me into the Haute Route. Should be able to organize work meetings in Switzerland Thursdays/Mondays to facilitate some trips.

Gear wise depends upon what we book, touring vs piste/off-piste skiing. Could do with a new jacket but prices are so high now it's startling, the old kit may yet get another outing.

@CFL - I worked in Singapore and looked quite a bit into Japan, easy stuff to do from Tokyo via train but Niseko is a real biatch - of planes, trains and automobiles hours and hours worth.

Anybody know if Crowbar snow lenses fit in Crowbar MX goggles? I can't see vented MX lenses and I think non vented would fog up. I used my O frames with vented persimmon lenses in last season with a Pro-Tec Ace SXP helmet. I feel I need some darker lenses as when it was sunny I had to resort to glasses and a hat.

Any ideas.

PS I think I might fit into some of the gapper description despite not having a gap. My trousers are bright blue and I don't have a clue what I'm doing.

No need for vented if you have the dual lens ski ones, IMO. Mine have never (touch wood!) fogged up.

Thats the thing, I have MX frames that have a single lens. I want to know if the ski lenses will fit in before I order some. I don't think the single lens will work well when skiing.

Ah, I getcha! Sorry!

I think they should work, as the only major differences are the single lens and the tear-off pegs, IIRC. A quick call to Oakley Towers should clarify, though!

Gaper gap - we call it Euro gap.
Another tip for the goggle wearers, is never put them up onto your helmet on a snowy wet day. Mine have frozen inside before now, so I always pop the goggles on inside a building where I've managed to either keep them dry or dry them off before heading back out.

Same old 'old school' Salomon scream8 for me 😥
Never mind, they still work very well.

My mate has a Smith Holt helmet, and Smith Phenom goggles. These are a helmet and goggles specifically designed to integrate and not have a gap.

He has a proper **** gap. How? I do not know.

I have a Smith Vantage and no gap with either Oakley Crowbars or Spy Soldiers. The Vantage is a sweet helmet.

I was on Line Prophet 98's all this past season, such lovely skis in every way for nearly all conditions, except for ridiculously deep pow. And Ive heard nothing but great things about there wider skis! This is coming from Whistler though where nearly everyone has phat skis, the euro style carving skis aren't very common here.

And ye that JP street section is pretty sweet!
