sad to see Frank Field has withdrawn his candidacy.
He would have been excellent IMO but unloved by his comrades on the Labour benches because he has a spine. As he says, if you dont have the backing of both major parties then you can never fullfill the role as well as you must.

Menzies also never stood and thank god that tit Cable didnt either.
so we have left:

Margaret Beckett (Lab)
Sir Alan Beith (Lib Dem)
John Bercow (Con)
Sir Patrick Cormack (Con)
Parmjit Dhanda (Lab)
Sir Alan Haselhurst (Con)
Sir Michael Lord (Con)
Richard Shepherd (Con)
Ann Widdecombe (Con)
Sir George Young (Con)

Mostly unknowns, but god help us if Bercow gets it....
6/4 favourtie though 🙁
who's your money on?

I disagree. Someone as forthright in opinions and willing to debate and discuss as Frank Field should be on the benches. I may not always agree with him, but I have great respect for the way he conducts himself.

Widdy as a caretaker until the GE, then a secret ballot based on those who are actually left!

Not Bercow. Not Widdicome

Beith would be a good neutral (although expenses?) One of the deputies? Unfortunately one or two of the conservative proposals are actual quite clever, so that'll never do... 🙄 Or George Young as the longest standing Conservative...

Matthew Parris reckons that Labour will inflict Bercow on the conservatives as revenge. I am not sure I know enough about the man to know how bad a thing that would be.
