Seven years ago I posted a thread on a visit Gerald made to do a moth count. I’ll add a link to it.

His enthusiasm for nature was kindled as child but the marvel in finding something new as an adult was just as infectious. Little by little he revealed more of his research. He was a bright light in his field.

Sadly he died a couple of weeks ago. His obituary was widely published.

We will miss him here on our hill

Reads like a perfect chap to have a pint with, albeit a grumpier one as we get older.
Love the visualisation of the phone calls "home soon dear, just weighing my shavings, looking forward to some TLC"

I remember that thread,it was ace, shame a lot of Sharki's photos don't show up now. Gerald sounds like he was indeed a top bloke.

He postulated a “male irritability syndrome”, pointing out that grumpiness in men coincides with declining testosterone.

How sad. Such knowledge and enthusiasm.

I loved re-reading that thread.
