As in Los Angeles. Anyone got any "must-see" tips? Restaurants, bars, buildings, locations etc.

Not going to have enough time to do anything as lovely as a studio tour, but would really appreciate anyone who's been sharing anything useful! (Or, as this is STW, anything utter off the wall and potentially illegal!)

Thanks in advance!

Euphemism?

It might be - CFH is a big-hair-metal groupie, so he'd know for sure. 😀

Nah, to me it's just monkey business. (seewhaddidithere?)

Am sure a "Big guns" reference will be lurking somewhere....And I don't mean firearms.

It was advice given to me - "they'll kill you!".

Madly fabulous place - although I spent my last night there sleeping in the Greyhound station, inside my bike bag.

Sorry but imho LA is a s*** hole.

Some one famously sung... "LA is a great big freeway" ... and that was 40odd years ago.

Get to the beach.... Venice is a tourist trap, but fun if you take it as such or try Santa Monica and it's pier.

The original Skid Row is in Seattle, where they used to 'skid' the cut logs down into the harbour, making it a less than desirable place to live.
Places to eat in LA? I spent a week there in '93, courtesy of the Beeb, and discovered this place the first evening exploring;

Drove down every evening from the hotel on Lankershim to eat there. Cool place, excellent food, treat the hot'n'sour soup with caution! 😳

Hey, I live work and hopefully not die in LA, live on coast but work downtown. If you want some advice from a Brit who lives here PM me.
Santa Monica/Venice is the the most touristy area, by beach, bars, safe etc, along with W Hollywood. downtown/Central LA has some bars and good food but i dont think you are missing all that much if you dont come here. go to malibu sea food for some fish tacos or whatever (just drive north on the pch past point dume, just past puerco canyon its on the right), you sit outside and look at the ocean and fool good about life. if you miss brits then you will find there are about a billion of us here (like 2-300k in LA county), go to the ye olde kings head on Santa Monica Blvd & 2nd (i think). anyway, PM away if you feel the need. Tim

Mutton, I've been in the Kings Head in Santa Monica, somewhat surreal experience sat looking out on a beach with palm trees, the Pacific lapping at the sand, drinking Guiness! 😀

As ever, STW delivers the goods (both Off and On Topic replies in almost equal measure!)

Ro5ey, not going through choice, but have a stopover on the way from somewhere else for a couple of days, so wanted to make the most of it.

Mutton, thanks. Really useful stuff. Am going to be in a hotel between West LA and Beverley Hills.

Not going to have any time to ride, sadly! 🙁

Anyone know how long it would take to drive from Beverley Hills area to Foothills Ranch*/Irvine sort of area.

Debating transport options to meetings, and driving looks good, but have heard nightmare stories of traffic in LA.

*Nobody tell Houns. He'll hate me! 8)

60-120 depending on freeways I'd guess (45-90 from LAX to foothills ranch)

Beg a bike & ride the luge just up the road. It'll only take an hour or so all in, apart from the shower & beer.

btw, are you here this w/e? the 405 (the main car smog gushing artery from the valley through west la to the south) is closed so it will either be A. Really nice and quiet with the locals rediscovering that feet can be used for walking not working pedals or B. YER GONNA DIIIIIE CARMMAGEDDON.
just a heads up. betwixt Bev Hills and West LA is a big area, is the hotel on Wilshire Blvd? there are fast buses that run between downtown and santa Monica if you want some lageritas. westwood is a neighbourhood with some bars (its next to UCLA). regards Irvine, its a bit of a schlep south (i forget which freeway without checking, 5 i think) but perfectly doable in an hour, hour 20.

bon chance
