Just wanted to say a quick thanks to all the folks who responded to my thread about ski kit a couple of weeks back. I'm just back and had an ace time. Fell over more times than I can count but would definitely go again.

Where did you go in the end? Slushfest in the afternoon unless you were really high up, I'd imagine!

Slushfest doesn't begin to cover it...then again I'd never skied before so I didn't know just how bad it was until we got some fresh snow on the last day and I discovered the delight of powder snow...

Anyway...went to Bavaria in the end. Somewhere near Sonofthen (or something).

How would sir like to pay for his new expensive hobby? 8)

Glad you had a good time! Keep at it, it's ace!
Top tip - have a look in the sales at proper ski shops for some boots. Your own boots would be the best investment you could make if you want to keep skiing.

Yeah...by the end of the week I was noticing a few problems with my boots. My feet tended to slide about in them a bit and the bindings never seemed to sit 'just so' the way they do on my cycling shoes etc.

As for it being an expensive new hobby and wanting to keep doing it...yes. Where do I sign?

I was in Les Menuires last week and there was a distinct lack of natural snow. Hard as nails for a couple of hours, pleasant for the next two then soup.

I hate buying boots. Too many variables to get wrong: flex, angle, size, width, sweaty thermoformable or felt, cant... . I splashed out on one pair and sold them for half what I'd paid after a few unhappy months. 🙁

Edukator, I loved getting my most recent pair (Salomon Impact 10CS. Heat moulded shell and a custom footbed. 120 flex which seems to suit me down to the ground)

Finding a good bootfitter is key!

Snowheads is very good. Sort of like STW on snow. With less TJ 😉

I just use my Dynafit Zero ski-alpinisme boots for everything now. On the Slalom skis I've got bindings that have a sliding plate under the toe so the rubber sole of the alpine boot doesn't hinder release. Not the most precise boots but happy feet.

Glad you had fun and are now suitably hooked.

Guess it was "Sonthofen". I've not been there but from a quick look at Googlemaps I have one tip for you:
Travel another hour South next year! :D

You've gone to the trouble of travelling all that distance and stopped just short of the best bits that would have assured you good snow. 😕

Re boots, this is worth spending some time and effort on.
There are certain makes of boots that fit thin feet well (eg Lange) and boots for wider feed (eg Atomic).
Just like bikes, try lots before you spend.

Marvellous.
