MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Think this is a new thing - I've not heard of it before - but you can now text emergency messages to 999.
More info at http://www.emergencysms.org.uk/
You have to register your mobile with them first before you can text it though.
Could be invaluable to alot of people, particularly those caught out in the wilderness with little phone battery...
Just registered, hopefully will never have to use it, but nice to know that I can.
I posted this a few weeks ago, but it's well worth repeating on a site like this - especially at this time of year.
Ah sorry, I tried searching for it but couldn't find anything.
Don't apologise - like I said, it's well worth a re-post.
Registered a few weeks ago, hopefully will never need to use it!
I can picture it now.
Yeah we have a call for you in the cheviots only a few details
"lolz wtf he just fell off his bik roflmao can urz come where @ da bridge"
Does it have a swear filter?
LOL@ drac

Hehe.
I'm not sure how this will work...it says my phone is registered with them...but apart from the phone number they have no other knowledge about me...so I send a text to 999 - if the signal is that bad, how do they know I've received their response? How does it help?
This is a genuine question...it sounds like a great idea, but the website doesn't give much info on how it can be used (and the text responses don't really give much more info)...I don't understand it (but have registered just in case...hopefully never need to use it but better safe than sorry).
Maybe they have the facility to trace a text, thus locating the sender
surely if you hadn't registered it would just go through like if you text a land line?
Primarily the service was set up for the deaf or hard of hearing but then rolled out more extensively
"When you send a Deaf 999 SMS, all the text following 999 will be converted to audio. The service will then dial the 999 emergency service automatically. When connected it will play your audio to the emergency services operator.
You'll receive response texts back to your mobile when:
A: The operator answers the call.
B: When the operator selects a response option.
C: When the operator hangs up the call.
The text number 50123 is a freetext number. Texts can be sent to this number even if a mobile is out of call credit.
The operator will always be informed of your mobile number and any other network information related to your call."

Sorry. I am quoting that again as it has made me laugh so much. Kudos Drac.

Aye to that. Miserable night just been lightened.
Drac's post made me glad I wasn't drinking or eating anything when I read it otherwise I'd either have soaked my phone or choked and needed to text 999. Funniest thing I've read in ages, thanks drac. 😆
