I have just got back from a week in La Clusaz where I learned to ski. Definitely up there with the best holidays I have ever had and the bug has got me and I want to go again.

Thing is it's about time for another baby and Mrs-g wants to wait to get preggers until our planned "summer" holiday in September so she looks good for the beach, this would rule out the whole of next winter for skiing so I think my only option is to go in the summer.

Whats the cheapest way to do this? I think we would be looking at a long weekend so southern hemisphere resorts are out of the question.

Any one got any experience on this one?

You could try the Hemel Alp (Indoor, but on snow...!)

Useful article here - http://www.****/travel/holidaytypeshub/article-589647/Summer-skiing-Europe.html
Yes, it's the Mail, but they do good ski coverage. Oh, and there's a picture of a girl in a bikini as well.
Which is nice.

You can ski all year on some of the glaciers in the Alps. Try Tignes.

You are looking at high glacial resorts. The available terrain will be severely limited compared to what is there in the winter and most places you can only ski from early morning (icy) to early afternoon (slushfest)

Off the top of my head there is summer skiing at:

Tignes
Les Deux Alpes
Hintertux

Can you not shoot off for a long weekend next winter without the preggers Mrs g? Skiweekends.com do a bus from Victoria Bus Station to Meribel in France, travelling overnight, 2.5 days skiiing and back by Tuesday morning. I did it and journey is a bit of a slog but it was still good and cheap.

I had a brilliant week in Zell am Zee in August. Fantastic biking especially in the bike park at Leogang and glacier skiiing and snowboarding at Kaprun.

Except the only slope open was the dullest nursery slope you've ever seen. Good for 2 hours entertainment max.

Yes you can ski the glaciers (Hintertux, Stubai, Kaprun, et al) in Summer... BUT its a novelty, good for an hour or two, not a holiday IMHO.
Don't bother. Save it for Winter and make the most of it then when you've got the conditions, the atmosphere and the full resort to go at.

You could try asking on snowheads.com. (the skiing equivalent of STW).

The latest I ever skied was last year in Scotland during the first week in May.

Mmmm babies, I thought they came along when they wanted and not necessarily when you wanted ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've been skiing on the Tignes glacier in late September and it was OK - icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon.

Summer skiing in red here:

Was OK but I can ski a bit and found the runs were very limited, only the cablecar was open so we ended up hiking the Grande Motte for a bit more fun!

Would be pretty good for working on your technique.

Other areas to look at include Stubai, Hintertux and Saas Fee.

I've heard of summer ski camps in Norway. Something about midnight skiing in daylight on a glacier

What about Norway or Finland? You can ski in June in the way north.

Other summer ski areas in the alps:
Saas Fee (Switzerland).
Monte Rosa Glacier Italy/Switzerland (Lift access from Cervinia or Zermatt).

Both the above are high @ approx 3000-3500m, so you might have altitude issues. The skiing at both is reasonably good by summer standards.

A few things about skiing in the high alps in summer.
They start early and finish early, usually 1st cable car to the high slopes will be around 7.30am with ski area tows open until 1pm-2pm, the main cable car back to the valley will usually continue until 3-4pm for walkers, climbers and tourists.
You might find it a bit unpleasent, alot of skiers crammed into a small area, all fighting to get to the slopes for a small window of skiing. Also, if you're at all self conscious, the slopes are usually full of ace local kids and national squads from around Europe on training camps.

I'm a very keen skier, spending 4 weeks a year on snow (would like 6-8) and have tried Glaciers, Plastic and Fridges (like Hemel where I will be going every other month over the Summer).

They are all pants. Glaciers are worth only if you are doing race training.

You shouldn't eat leeks in June or Strawberries in December, get her up the duff right now. See you on the snow next Winter. 8)

You could only ski in the morning when I was in Tignes, how about NZ? That's were all the French instructors go.

Missing one years skiing is hardly the end of the world if your having a kid is it ??

Maybe you could plan a summer holiday with the option to ski on a glacier, I doubt you would want to do a week of it though as the snow is the same every day. I wouldnt say its icey just rock hard, then great for about 30 mins then turns to slush. You start off in the valley early in the morning dressed in not very much, start going up the hill and get cold, put more layers on and then start to get hot as the temp rises.

Most of the European glaciers tend to get taken of by national squads training, we always used to go to Hintertux. The ques up in the morning would be big, and I'd imagine if your just learning it would be quite intimerdating having very good skiers flying past you all the time.

Good for an odd days entertainment whilst your on another type of holiday but not good for an all week holiday IMO.

I've skied in Tignes, in late June. You need to be on the slopes very early, and expect to finish before midday as it gets slushy. It was ok, but think of it as a fun activity on your summer holiday, rather than a proper skiing holiday. In my view, a couple of hours skiing in the morning, followed by an afternoon sunbathing by the pool makes for a pretty successful day.
