Dunno which to go for, any plus/minus points to look at? Heat output, storage, cast iron or 'clay' (or whatever)
(That pit on Autumnwatch looks cosy)
Garden is quite sheltered as far as wind goes, (except when I've had onions, sprouts or pasta.)

Any tips?

Firepits are great, especially when you're trying to get it going and the wind changes direction. 🙄
They're one of the stupidest things I've seen, more so the ones that are built in situ.
I've seen folk burn themselves on gas-bottle stoves, but at least that's just been a finger or palm. If it'd been a firepit involved I guess they might have been on top of it! (yes, drink was involved!)

My advice.... Don't bother. I got one thinking I would use it.... But when it's cold I would rather be inside by the fire or in the pub 🙂 awaits flaming from the stw log loving outdoor fire warming nazis. Ha.

Chiminea is the way to go, in cast iron. Ours kicks out loads of heat and retains it really well. Plus you can bbq on it.

And this place was to blame with me getting one! Hence I listen no longer.

This has been done a lot. Consensus is that fire pits are ok if you aren't near neighbours because they create loads of smoke that blows everywhere.

We have a small compact chimenea which isn't really big enough. Having sat and thought about it I'd go for one of the metal ones with the tall chimney, as that would get hot and re radiate a lot more heat. Tempted to get some metal ducting and fab some sort of heat exchanger for ours 🙂 Oh and if you can put it under or just outside a patio umbrella/gazebo you'll trap loads more warmth.

chimnea every time. We have a 5 year old cast iron one...kicks out loads of heat and is fuel efficient.

Cheers Andy but that's way beyond the realms of sensibility for a North Yorkshire garden!
I'll probably only use it about 10 times every 12 moths. (see what I did there)

Go for a fire pit washing machine drum if you want a cheap option.

Whatever you get, the compacted sawdust logs are fantastic value for money. Our local Home Bargains sells them for £1 each I think. We bought a load and stored them. They are easy to light and burn for hours (2-3), giving off loads of heat.
