would I be able to stream media from a Panasonic hard disc recorder (that has dnla and wifi)

i guess that would depend on what format the panasonic has recorded the media in but that not why i posted.
What advantage would there be to take the media from the pany to the roku to the tv, why not start to the tv as intednded?
