MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Quick question for all the techie folk on here. I look after the website for my tri club, and we'd like to offer some way for members to easily share event pictures. Self-hosting doesn't seem like the right way to go because of bandwidth and storage costs, so I'm thinking dropbox or flickr might be the way forward.
Which one would you go for?
Flickr: everyone in the club has Yahoo! accounts (don't ask!) so everyone will already have a Flickr account - all I'd need to do is create a group and add a set for each event, etc. Downside is the need for an account for each contributor - so family members can't easily add photos.
Dropbox's big draw is accessibility - anyone can drop photos into the storage space. However I don't think it really has the full range of "album"-type function that I'm after (specifically, a club "group" and then an album for each event). Is that even possible using dropbox?
Are there other better options I should be looking at? All input gratefully received 🙂
All the clubs I'm involved with use Facebook. Works pretty well for sharing pics, setting up albums, etc. but there's always a few people who say they 'don't do facebook'. I have used Flickr too and it does seem to work but never got that involved in using it to find the limitations.
Flickr is good for sharing photos and viewing photos online. Groups work really well and can be as public or private as you like.
Its less good for bulk file moving. In other words you can't just grab 30 photos for use at home. You have to download 1 by 1. But it is free and allows unlimited full resolution photos, which is a major draw
I think dropbox would eventually end up costing money, unless you were very careful about space.
At the risk of sounding like a Lib Dem surely the answer is both. Run it all via Flickr. But have a dropbox for people who want to throw photos in if they don't have a Flickr account. Just create a folder for each event. 3 days after the event upload photos to the club account. Googling sugest that you can automate this
