my sony viao laptop wont shut down , it just stays saying logging off untill i reboot (hold the off button for 20 secs) if i open it in safe mode it occasionally shutsdown peoperly othertimes it does not. As far as i'm aware its all up to date on windows.

i'd be interested to know this as well as my acer ocassionally does this as well
something running in the background causing it to jam, see what programs are still running in the background using task manager after you shut down all your programs just befor shutting down
This is usually a driver issue. The hardware drivers are responsible for shutting down the various bits of hardware so try reinstalling them off the manufacturers website(s). Go into the device manager (Control Panel | System | Hardware in XP at least) to see what is in there already.
