If your child does not learn French it may not be the teachers fault. Some people are not very good at things and some people are very good at it. Lets call them bright and less bright ?A teacher who teaches the less bright will always get poorer results than someone who teaches the bright. Simply looking at who learns the most freanch [sic] to let you knwo who teaches the best wont really work.
Ps the majority of intelligence is attributable to inheritance. It may be a bad teacher it may be less bright pupils.

As explained, I do, I do, I do, take regular responsibility. Homework is always done, spelling, reading, math.....we enjoy it, it's value time.

Just really frustrating to be force to take time off work due to strikes - because "we can" - "we will" attitude.

And here's the rub. It's me as the parent that will have to break the news that the school play is cancelled on the 30th June 'cause the teacher are striking!

The effort that's gone into learning lines, the practice, the fun, friendships and bonding, as the finale - just before leaving primary for secondary.

Only then to have the bloody rug pulled! and in the end, when all's said and done! it's us parents who have to pick up the piece. Whereas, the teacher break for the summer, refine their tans, and start againin Spetember.

And as you know I don't agree with the strike, so having a go at me is misplaced. Having a go at teachers in general because of poor students isn't on, crap students with good teachers won't learn without special expensive classes.
The strike is a result of career teachers wanting to protect their pensions and not vocational teachers who want to do their jobs. The strike in my opinion is a selfish act when we are in the middle of a global financial crisis. Everyone has to sacrifice something with the aim of getting out of the crisis, me, you and the teachers.

There are, of course, two sides, the other side of teaching is learning. Can you blame the teachers for poor learning?

I'm 39 when I went through the school system it was going through what I would describe as it's new age/hippy stage. Very little atention or time was given to spelling and grammer it was all about expressing your self. You weren't marked down for spelling or grammer and correct me if i'm wrong but isn't this something the school system has now realised was a big mistake? The 3 r's are now a lot more important due to the poor core educational skills of the nation. Hard to be good at something your not taught properly isn't it? Of course it's not all the teachers fault your only following government guide lines but it's hardly all my fault is it?

@Don Simon - Fair point I missed that as I did scan through parts of this thread as reading all the pointless bickering does get more than a bit tedious. It doesn't change the fact that imo there isn't a lot of public support for this strike. If it was about the shambles the education system is in then I think it would be a different story, but then thats not about taking money out of your pocket is it!

Here's a thought (after a moment of calibration). The school fete is tomorrow, and THANKS to the teachers (extra-curricular) efforts it's going ahead - lets not forget that!

So I will very much look forward to fielding a wet sponge or two for charity

But putting such silliness to one side and playing by your rules, you very early in the thread questioned [i]"the teachers' commitment to teach"[/i] ......otherwise why would you even have mentioned it ? And questioning the teachers' commitment to teach, very much constitutes 'slagging off teachers' in my book.

Furthermore the title to this thread is extremely misleading. Anyone reading [i]Teachers striking again!!!!![/i] with no less than FIVE exclamation marks, could be forgiven for thinking that teachers had only recently been on strike - maybe last month ? And yet out of the two teaching unions which have voted for strike action, one hasn't had a national strike for 3 years and the other hasn't had one in 127 years.

The purpose of the wholly misleading thread title is clear, it is to portray teachers in a critical and negative way. And the purpose of posting the thread itself is also clear - to invite others to be critical and negative about teachers.

I was never taught grammar either, I can remember my sister coming home with homework about the present perfect, I never had such homework. I'm about five years older than you so aound the same era. I also learnt to rean phonetically using the ITA system. I don't, however, feel that anything was lacking in my education and I currently teach English and ocassioanlly feel obliged to correct people's spelling or grammar on here when I'm bored. I don't think we can blame the teachers for the methodology the state obliged them to use. We can blame the lazy ****ers for not implementing the system well.
What I also see here is a particularly selfish attitude on the side of the teachers, here we are in the middle of a global financial crisis, where people are suffering across the globe, 250,000 house repossessions in Spain during this year is one figured being spoken about (sorry no data ernie), and the teachers are complaining that their net income is going to be reduced so they can maintain their pensions. Neither and intelligent or sensitive move in my book. Also what I've seen on here is a particularly poor attitude by some of the teachers on here by way of defending their attitude, and a particularly poor level of English too. I am left asking the question as to whether I would want to put these people in charge of my children's education.
It might just be that the govt has a different agenda, and that the tories want to move away from the state funding education towards a more private sector based education system, but hey, it's the govt you've got, you had the opportunity to vote and vote for a different govt, we come back to taking responsibility for your actions. 😉

If you cannot see this or understand it then it is you my friend who is living in a bubble and that bubble is an socio-economic one.

Simple fatc is that teachers are striking because they can and because their strikes have a real impact. The teachers cannot be easily replaced and closing the schools will not happen.

You suggested closing the schools and home educating, I as a teacher would make a fortune if the state system was closed. However just like I will not go and work in a private school so that I dont have to help those poor young scallies learn I also dont want to see the state system undermined and the cuts in jobs with associated increases in class size, combined with some teachers leaving the state system to get better pay as there renumeration is eroded will see those kids suffer.

these were the only two facts I got
1. teachers cannot be sacked yes they can HERE when they are crap
2. Unfair to observe -All teachers are observed both externally [OFSTED] and internally.

the main reason we dont do comparison between teacher so the point i made before about intelligence being inherited and if you work with less able pupils you will get worse results than if you work with more able pupils. There is no way to control this and come up with a fair and objective measure of performance given they all work with different "materials".

Damn it i'm in the ATL and the strike day is the last day of term. Mind you Scottish teachers ain't striking.

A teacher friend of mine said he was striking, I asked him several questions regarding his pension and the changes that have been proposed which he couldn't answer.
I'ts just another excuse for yet another day off.
I really don't think they know how well off they are, I'm quite jealous of them really!
