so i got a "rebate" today from a very official looking email from inland revenue, with information about my rebate. I couldn't think how they thought they owed me £386 but i wasn't going to argue. Email led to official looking website (though web address changed from an official looking one to lots of characters and numbers...) input all my details, details of card payment is to be made to, security code from the back, mothers maiden name etc and input payment amount claimed. It also had a mastercard secure code thing. Either way, I assume if i put my details in, they'd bill my card for that ammount, nd have all my details!

For reference,

HMRC will never email you to tell you about rebates/ money owed etc.

I had one too a few weeks ago... does look legit, but HMRC only correspond with letters, not emails.. If I hadnt been getting loads with mum passing away and now looking after Dad I may have fell for it... must do it every year

And HMRC aren't that efficient. I got a check for £800 last year, for the 2004/5 tax year !!
